Sadly, I believe stopping one can be very difficult, which is why prevention is very important.

If war can not be avoided we must endeavor to set concrete realistic goals. Support and preparation are key.
Ex the first Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991) Had UN Support, a coalition force of 34 nations and a clear goal, Expel Iraqi Forces from Kuwait.
http://www.rand.org/pubs/monograph_reports/2007/MR629.pdf

Quick uses of strategic power can make for a very quick set of battles. Intel is key here having a spy network, spy planes &/or satellites can mark key strategic points. Modern technology can speed battles and warfare with units such as UAVs and cruise missiles.

In a republic or democracy public opinion can sway the length of a war and what methods are used to fight a war. Officials will be less inclined to support a unpopular war.

If citizens wish to stop a war they must spread information about the financial costs as well as the human costs of the war. Erode the financial and political support for the war and Politicians may refine goals &/or rethink strategy for a faster resolution.

Great question!

I think this is a bit hard. If government officials themselves can't stop it, then what can a poor ordinary citizen could do?

If there's a will, there's a way as they say. Maybe stopping a war can be impossible especially for ordinary people but still, we can do something.

There are some organizations promoting peace and order and it would help if you would join them in their missions. With the help of the world wide web, we can also spread peace easily by for instance, writing a blog, joining different forums and advocate peace and inspire other people as well.

But before stopping others' war, let's start within our own self. Let's start promoting peace within us by being good and patient with others and not starting our own little wars. And through this hopefully, we can influence others by being their role model.

That worked pretty well for the Mongols, although it was always enemies who might defend again that they were concerned about.

Apparently do what every other country appears to do....

write a letter to:

The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

or call:

1-202-456-1111

In reality the only thing that can be done is what happened in WWII, a bunch of countries have to come together and tell the leader....cut this BS out, or we are going to have to repeat Hiroshima.

I wish there was an answer war hits home and with a lot more American than we realize. My godson was in Afganistan and as a very you man was brought back completely disabled in body and mind and it hurts. I understand there are innocent people, women and children being murder every second and something does need to be done about it. I feel instead of just going about to invade and kill we do need to focus on another approach. War is to groups fitting for what they want or one group feeling superior wanting a take over. There does have to be some way to stop and change the ways of the todays wars and I feel this should be one of the government priorities as it is draining the financial, human, etc strain on the world depends on it. I don't know nor do I think anyone else had an answer to stopping was at this time but I feel the quest should be on and thing like communication, safe harbor, rounding up the attackers, educating, butting out of certain issue and things like that should be the start of looking into a solution. We are in a war right here in the US with our own government being just citizen and only a handful know that and this is own we can control if we all got together and stood up to them. I'm fightingback, my eyes have been opened to it, it was dropped on my lap. We the people really need to open our eyes and get out our opinion publicly out.

The best way to stop a war is to hand the politicians who started it, a gun and make THEM go fight. Wars are usually started by old rich men and fought by young poor men. If the people who wanted a war risk their own lives, there would be much less war in the world.

My history teacher in college told us that all wars are fought over trade and resources. The only way to stop a war is to settle the trade/resource issue. The current war on terror (you cannot make war on a noun, because you cannot defeat a term as there is no direct enemy) is being fought over oil. They may say that it is for Middle East stability, or to keep the Taliban out of Afghanistan. Well, both conflicts are over oil. The invasion of Iraq was to secure their oil. The war in Afghanistan was to secure a route for a pipeline. This was the same reason that the former Soviet Government invaded Afghanistan. Going back to the Civil war, that was about trade, the south resented the rich north making rules that impovrished them. Historians would have you believe that the Civil War was about slavery. If you go back and look, the only reason that Lincoln freed the slaves was to keep France from supporting the South. (It was a good thing, but for the wrong reason) The Revolutionary war was more about the Central Bank of England than about taxation without representation. Ben Franklin said that a Central Bank was evil and that it was the bain of free trade. That is why it took almost 150 years after the Revolution for a Central Bank to be formed in the U.S. Tea tax was merely the issue that caught the publics imagination. The other way to stop a war is to win it.....If you go back further to the Trojan war, they said that Helens face was a face to launch a thousand ships, that was a pretext, the real issue of that war was dominance of trade in the Mediterranean Sea.... All war is about Trade and Resources... In WWII the Japs looked to the south and termed it all the Southern Resource Area, which guided their war plans. Including China because of their ability to supply unlimited amounts of slave labor. The only other way to stop a war is to WIN...Hope this helps....Truth be told, we are at war this very moment. The Powers that Be want to reduce the U.S. to third world status. If we are not careful, they will suceed. Actually, we are in the last stages of this war, and we have lost every battle so far.....I would really like to know if you were talking about a specific war....Thanks Zgrinch

"The only way to stop a war is to settle the trade/resource issue."

I believe you correctly used this comment referring to the "current war on terror" among others. How would you believe this current trade/resource issue could be resolved?

So what resources are we fighting over in Afghanistan? It is one of the poorest countries in the world. Please don't say we want to erradiacte the drug resources of that country as we have barely flirted with the idea in 8 years of war. Oh, wait...for a pipeline? You can't be serious that we (and most of NATO) would fight over a pipeline which we could have had through purely economic incentives.

IMHO... Afghanistan is simply an aspect of the war between ThePowersThatBe and America's 1st World status. It is a source of newsbytes to distract us while our prosperity is leeched away from us. It is a strategy of misdirection and like most other recent "wars", is an excuse to help explain away our economic collapse. It therefore is an exception to the classic trade/resource issue... or more abstractly, the resources being fought over in Afghanistan are the american dollars that were until recently occupying american bank accounts.
Just my thoughts of course.

I read somewhere a while back that those that support a war should pay for it directly by going or paying for expenses. While not very thought out, it does bring something to light. If you told those that wanted the war to suit up and go over with, would they continue to support it? Would it end? I just don't mean citizens, but including government.

Do you think by asking those involved in the decision to go to any war recently would go? And if they did not would that stop the war?

Usually a war is stopped in one of three ways. World War II was stopped by destroying the enemies ability to make war and convincing the enemy that further conflict was useless. "Winning." That is one way.
Having your ability to make war destroyed by the enemy and becoming convinced that further conflict is useless. "Losing." That is the second way.
Having your ability and the enemies ability to wage war mutually destroyed by each other, and becoming convinced that further conflict is useless. "Stalemate". This is what happened to end the Korean War, except that officially, the Korean War never ended.
Negotiations usually end in one of these three scenarios.

It seems to me the easiest way to stop one is before it starts. I really don't get how they're apparently so easy to start in the first place.

I actually heard an interview on NPR recently in which a man said that if all diplomats were to hold babies when they met, there would be no war. That seems pretty simple, and true.

I think a possible scenario is to create a story that would present itself to be very bad for both parties involved. Then present it to the media in any way you can. If the media can get a hold of such a story and spread it through the world it would put fear into everyones heart thus possibly causing the multiple parties to make a treaty and concentrate at the "event" at hand.

Its unfortunate to say but I believe that the only time this entire world will find peace is after a cataclysmic event such as WWIII or something else that could threaten humanity. When something like this would or will happen we will begin to think as a whole instead of as a part for the neccessity to continue living.

I will say that, everyman is brother of another but we are killing our brother!! And I will prayer to all the famous celebrities and stars to accept my idea. The idea is"what is war absolutely nothing, what is the benefit of war absolutely nothing, but " people don't think what benefit of war?If all of we including president or prime minister will think benefit and disadvantage of war there will be no war.

but it is really true that stop a war is really very hard.

They say that one war, once started, can't be stoped except if one of the parts gave up.

Yet, it depends of what was the real reason for war had been started. here allmost all wars have had a "public relation" issue. Almost no war was not started for the reason was "suggested" or proclaimed. There were always hidden reasons.

Shortly, the best way to stop a war is not to start it. But this is not an option, usually, exactly because there are hidden reasons ..

If you like comparisons, the mother of all wars is Mrs. Politics (side note - religious wars woudn't have exist if churchs - any one - wouldn't want a piece of that pie is "power") and Mrs. Diplomacy, a Politics's good friend, is not always listen .. While Diplomacy would be taken as a "pro-choice" fan, Politics is a "no-abortion" supporter.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Politics is the queen while Mrs Diplomacy is just an advicer .. So that if mother Politics want to have that baby called "war" .. will have it.

So, what other options are there to stop a war ?

- the attacker to win. Well, is a temporary peace. The looser survivors will start a guerilla war-back, sooner or later.

- the attacked win. Odds are that former attackers will not try again. lol History showed us that sooner or later they will try again .. or against other one ..

- total extinction of one of the parts involved. Wel, that would probably stop THAT war forever. Yet never happen so all stays at theory level ...

- third part involving. That usually works. A third party, feared and/or respected by both parts, take position between the beligerants and stay there until the both official and hidden war-starting-reasons are solved peacefully. Worked, more or less, sometime.

- riots (non-violence ones are better) inside attacker's "body". Probably the third option available. But require lot of "balls". And require to know and be able to prove and make public the real reasons of war start. For more details, ask Country Joe McDonald ;-) (if someone don't know who is it, google it).

And, as result of thinking to answer to this question, I can't stop thinking again to Beatles's (John Lennon) "Imagine"
