A long time ago, I took a Political Science class where we simulated a world conflict and negotiations. What I got from it... Don't get involved in the Middle East.
As I understand it (and this is just my memory), there is a part of one religion (is it Muslim) that says that if you're not part of the religion, you don't have any rights (must die?). Something of that nature. Hard to negotiate with religion doctrine that excludes all others.
Also, it's VERY difficult to have peace when three major religions believe they started in your front yard...
