For anyone who's traveled to other countries or spoken to foreign visitors, it's pretty commonplace to meet people who have nothing but bad things to say about America. They're nice at first, pleased to meet an American, but get them to really open up and I mostly just heard negativity, distrust, and a distaste for the incessant invasion of American culture. Things have only gotten worse in recent years, particularly since Bush has been in office. The war did nothing, absolutely nothing, to redeem our reputation.

Personally, I chuckle to see somebody throw shoes at Bush. I also, simultaneously, am appalled at the lack of respect. Like him or not, he's the President of the U.S. and, as such, deserves a modicum of courtesy. He represents the U.S. and so somebody throwing shoes at him is like somebody throwing shoes at all of us. Not to mention, boil it down, he's a human being who can be humiliated or embarrassed just like the rest of us. In that vein, I feel sympathy for the man who just had shoes lobbed at his head.

PS: Props to Bush's reflexes. Boo to the molasses reaction of the Secret Service. Somebody could have emptied their gun in the time it took them to say, "Uh...wha...?"

Edit: In watching the video a couple more times, it wasn't even the Secret Service that pulled the man back. It was another journalist sitting behind him who pulled the guy to the ground.

Yes, I watched it and was totally saddened by the lack of respect and total hostility toward the U.S. president...also translating to our country. Would that happen to the President of China? The world has become so hostile and rude. Regardless of your/my feelings for the man personally, this is unacceptable. I am glad he has such quick reflexes.

Agree it's not acceptable.

However, looking at it from the perspective of the folks in the middle east you can understand their frustration. We invaded their country under false pretense without the support of the rest of the world.

Clearly we should have waited Saddam Hussein out and gone into the war with the support of the United Nations--even if that took another couple of years.

I travel around the world and we have a horrible reputation right now--it's really sad. The good news is everyone around the world is like "oh, American's are putting in Obama? American's are not stupid."

People were congratulation me/America on my last couple of trips. They were happy for us to get Bush out of office. He really was a horrible president when it came to international relations.

My thoughts? Bush has got pretty good moves for someone his age. If someone threw a shoe at me, I wouldn't have been able to bob and weave like that - I'd have a big foot print on my face.

Disbelief was my first thought. It seemed too much like one of those "Onion" articles that they've been running lately where President Bush gets injured in bizarre ways.

Plain and simple, even if the reporter did it out of frustration, it's assault and the reporter's going to be charged with a felony. Those shoes were solid men's dress shoes. He could have really gotten hurt had he been hit.

Oh, and here's Mahalo's page of the coverage:
