The Large Hadron Collider at CERN was turned on for the first time and tested.
Measurements of dark matter and dark energy are edging scientists closer and closer to finding a grand unified theory of the universe.
In non-science news, the Olympics happened, which is always good for positive stories. Like Michael Phelps kicking butt and taking names, er, medals.

Oh, and actually I think on the long run this whole financial and ecological crisis all around the globe will bring us good because it forces politics, companies and individuals to seriously rethink the way we act.
Here's to change!

Just kidding .... I won't be getting starting income and raises that will affect my income for the entirety of my career :o(
So positive: Fidel Castro stepped down, and his brother is moving towards a more capitalistic form of government, easing tensions that could have come back to bite us in the future with the rise of Russia.

Apple released the iPhone 3G
Google released the Google Chrome browser
(More Specifically the V8 script Engine)!!!!!!
Which allows users to view and work with javascript 5x's faster than anything else available.
Compression schemes, codecs and packagers have all come a long long way.
For instance the LZM/LZMA scheme and the optimizations done to the 7ZIP compression algorithm which put 7z at the top of the best packager past WinRar.
The best thing about it is, 7zip, LZM, and the V8 engine are all completely open source.

• i already knew of the good news network, but i think it makes the best answer to this question, because they work all year long to bring the positive new events from the world to their readers. i wish the main news sources would also bring more positive news as well.

And in breaking news, Jason Calacanis from Mahalo.com announced that Mahalo has invented a time machine. Users can submit questions in 2008, and Mahalo will respond with the answer that will occur in 2009. Asked to comment, John C Dvorak said "Bah, it is a scam! Dvorak.org/blog"

I like Obama, but McCain is a really great American hero. The main difference between him and Obama is that he's more of a self reliance, self determination political who believes in limited government as opposed to big government and the nanny-state style of the left.

Muntadhar al-Zaidi threw his shoes at President Bush. That's not necessarily such a great thing, but the late night shows really had a (hilarious) field day with it. And personally, I've never been prouder of the President. Did you see how fast he moved? Way to go, Bush!

There's been some awesome science news this year. If you're a science geek like I am, these are positive things. The Large Hadron Collider at CERN was turned on for the first time and tested.
Measurements of dark matter and dark energy are edging scientists closer and closer to finding a grand unified theory of the universe.
In non-science news, the Olympics happened, which is always good for positive stories. Like Michael Phelps kicking butt and taking names, er, medals.

i'm happy you had a wonderful 2008 in your personal life. you really deserved it. and perhaps the financial and ecological crisis will lead to positive things and changes worldwide, but their effect on us this year were not. and i am sure all the people, who lost their jobs and houses would love to agree with you, but at the moment they're trying to find a way to survive now. and i am sure the polar bears are happy that we dumbass humans are trying to pass laws and use less energy and recycle and whatever, but right now their homes are melting away. but here's to change and hoping we make it.

This funny bad-economy thing going on? I'm in a really safe job, with benefits predefined well into the future. So the fact that prices of everything is going down turns out to be a good thing for me :) SORRY 95% OF AMERICA!! Just kidding .... I won't be getting starting income and raises that will affect my income for the entirety of my career :o(

true. no matter how many butt-kicking movies hollywood made about space stuff the last couple decades, they couldn't manage to keep up that awesome heroes of our nation reputation NASA once had and still deserves for all of their work. even the simpsons touched on the subject. that was a great episode. perhaps we'll see even more good successes from them. i hope so.

A positive change like that should have made more headlines, especially about the progress of it since the first headlines were full of skepticism, but oddly it didn't. Good answer though.
