Where did the term "woot" come from? What does it stand for?

Why is it sometimes spelled "w00t"?
Tip for best answer: M$0.35
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

"Woot" derives from "whoot", an exclamation appearing in 1993 rap lyrics "whoot there it is". This was associated at the time with criminal assaults on young women in NYC pools.
Some internet gamers and hackers like to spell words with numbers, probably to avoid filters and searches; they call it LEET or L33T.

The original meaning seems to be forgotten except by people such as me who read the newspapers back in the 90's. The current meaning seems to be simply an exclamation of joy at finding something or minor victories.

The source below www.doubletongued.org explains why the other offered explanations of the word are not tenable.

W00t is a term that rose in popularity during the 1990s and is popular in the Internet especially in MMORPGS. It is a Leet corruption of the exclamation "Woot!" which means "Hooray". The excalamation and the Leet spelling are of uncertain origin. There have been many explanations that has been offered but did not cite any reliable research and definitive sources.

Synonyms of w00t:
---quote--
* hoorah!, hurrah!
* hoorah!, hurray!
* huzzah!
* woohoo!
* whoopee!
* yay!
* yeah!
* yes!
* yippee!
* alright!
* OMG!
---end of quote---

Being an RPG gamer for almost 11 years now, it's from an exclamation for finding loot on the ground. It's the combination of wow! and loot. The other answerer was correct. It is indeed from that. I've been saying it since...OMG - 1998!

according to the urban dictionary

Apparently it was originally a hacker's term for admin access to a computer, but became a gamer's term in common usage.

Dungeons and Dragons players used the term "wow! loot!" which was shortened to w00t! when people started playing games online

other gaming definitions include "We Owned the Other Team" and "Wonderful Loot"

This is totally inaccurate, as is almost everything in the Urban Dictionary. The urban dictionary is completely unedited and consists of guesses, jokes, and plain obscenity contributed by an uninformed public.

'woot' is a hacker term that derives from 'root' which means root, or system (low-level) access.
