Gestational diabetes is a true medical condition. During pregnancy, the placenta secretes a hormone which increases the serum glucose. The affects of elevated glucose on the fetus are numerous and include macrosomia(big baby). This is not a condition that should be treated lightly and should be followed by a board certified maternal-fetal-medicine specialist.

if the doc wants you to test your blood sugar, do it. if they want you to take shots or pills, do it. uncontrolled blood sugars can interfere with the baby's development.
the good news is, it usually goes away after the birth.
good luck.

I'm not sure how to answer this. Gestational diabetes is diabetes associated with pregnancy. Since both are pretty well defined conditions, I don't know how you could consider them a myth. If you are asking whether gestational diabetes is just the metabolic strains of pregnancy unveiling a previously existing case of diabetes, that certainly is a possibility.

To fight gestional diabetes, which can become type II diabetes later in life, eat more organic veggies and take a high quality fish oil/omega 3,6,9 product which helps the body stabilize blood sugar levels. Also drink filtered water and cut out the soda/sugar products. good luck!
