about The Runaways
With the soon to be released The Runaways movie, do you think there will be a newfound interest in the all-girl 70s rock band?

I'm looking forward to seeing this, and have a feeling the movie will be a hit...am especially excited to see Dakota Fanning tackle such a uniquely challenging role (Cherie Currie), and overall am looking forward to seeing how the subject matter will be portrayed.
As for whether the movie will cause a renewal of interest in the band ... I expect that it will. But I think the career it will most propel forward is Joan Jett, and rightfully so. The Runaways have greater importance in rock and roll history because of what she went on to do and become. To quote Rolling Stone, "OF THE RUNAWAYS, JOAN JETT WAS THE TRUE ROCKER ..." Looking at her entire career--the Runaways and beyond--she is an iconic figure in rock and roll. She is currently promoting the Runaways film, getting ready to release an authorized biography (written by Todd Oldman), looking great, speaking out as a feminist and an animal rights activist, and TOURING. She's a smart, courageous and talented woman...and I especially admire that she has consistently made an effort to be known for her work vs. making a fool of herself for the tabloids or reality tv. Joan Jett is authentic. As she said in a recent interview with the NY Post: "“I’m not looking for a huge profit; that’s not the motive. The profit is when kids come up to me and say, ‘You inspired me to pick up a guitar.’ Or ‘I was having a really tough time and your music helped me through it’ . . . That’s currency to me. Obviously you can’t pay your rent with it, but that’s why I’m always out on the road . . . I’ve toured every year since 1975, and I’ve been lucky enough that people still want to come to our shows.”
Getting back to your specific question of of whether the new Runaways movie will inspire renewed interest in that band ... the starpower involved with it, the fact that it has a great story to tell, the nostalgia factor (looks like it could be a great '70s film), and the fact that Joan Jett went on to bigger and better things should all assure that this will be the case.

Great point! I agree. I was born in the 80s and unfortunately didn't grow up listening to either The Runaways or Joan Jett, but I knew of Joan once I grew older and really started appreciating music. I hopped on a Joan Jett kick right before I heard about the movie being made and I've been grabbing for music ever since. She really is a living legend and the story behind The Runaways along with the impact they had on music is amazing. I cannot wait to see it portrayed on the big screen. I'm a huge Kristen Stewart fan as well, plus Dakota Fanning does seem to do a great job with her role as Cherie Currie. Bottome line is I'm excited!
Thanks for those videos, by the way.
Too bad the movie is NOT about the runaways but rather a love story between Joan Jett and Cherry Currie. You only learn that they toured in Japan( they toured many otehr places) You dont learn shit about Jackie Fox, Lita Ford or Sandy West. At the end they tell you what happened to Joan Jett, Cherry and even Kim Fowley ( the weird freak who happens to be their manager ) but again nothing about the other 3 , as a movie its good, as a movie about Joan Jett its good as a movie about the runaways which is the title it sucks ass.
I'm a Dakota Fanning fan, but don't know all that much about Kristin ... she looks great in the clips from the movie I'm seen, and it's awesome to see Joan Jett speaking so highly of her in the Sundance interview. Can't wait to see this movie!
I notice you just joined ... welcome to Mahalo, and hope you'll stick around! You started off by asking an awesome question :-)
Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. I figure thinking of random off the wall questions that interest me would work. :-) I plan on sticking around awhile.
