With new releases such as Tekken 6, what is the future of fighting games? Will they prevail or become overshadowed by titans FPS like CoD?

With the ability of playing onine available everywhere, FPS blockbusters like CoD have taken good footing into the world of gaming for everyone. Releases such as Street Fighter 4 and Tekken 6 are now out and I was wondering if fighting games would last against the ongoing growth of FPS and co-op games?

Fighting games will always have a future, since their games have an appeal that everyone can enjoy: two, or more, characters belting the living daylights out of each other in a purely competitive environment.

Other games have fighting components, like Infamous or Prototype, but they don't have the depth of a Tekken or Street Fighter. Fighting games at heart are simple: they're easy to pick up, very easy to understand and most importantly - they appeal to everyone.

Unlike a lot of FPS games, fighting games also have a very hardcore, dedicated, competitive community. The Evo fighting championship, held annually in America, is the largest grouping for fighting game tournaments around the world. Last year it even partnered up with IGN, who covered large portions of the event (such as covering several matches of the Street Fighter tournaments).

Fighting games also work on an arcade level, which means they'll never ever die in regions like Japan. They're also a lot easier to port onto handheld consoles like the Nintendo DS or PSP, and as a result cost a lot less to make for a developer.

The only thing really holding fighting games back is the poor implementation of online play. The option is there in Tekken and Street Fighter, but the netcode is nowhere near as tight or as solid as a CoD or a Counter-Strike. With time this will improve though, and that will only continue to strengthen the fighting game genre for many years to come.

as long as there are fans of fighting games and corporations that see them as a profit you can be sure that games like tekken, street fighter and soul caliber will be sure to have sequels in the future. now weather they become as big as say halo or CoD is hard to see even for me and I'm a big soul caliber fan. in my opinion this stems from the accessibility of shooters to casual or new gamers, all you have to do is pick up your controller and know how to shoot and bing bang boom your having a blast. fighters on the other hand you need to learn the ins and outs of each character and their moves one combo at a time to win a match and practice those moves to really get into the gameplay this can be frustrating and a turn off to the more casual gamer. now FPS have a massive group of fans but fighters like SF tend to have a much more dedicated group of fans, and its these fans that keeps the games alive and keeps the sequels coming out so they may not get as popular as CoD but be sure that fighters will always have a place in the gaming community
