With broad interests, how can I better focus my time-energies? Ideas often arise from previously non-connected topics.

In art, reading, exploring business opportunities, working w/friends on their ventures, etc. I find myself delving into a new area to understand it further. Often this results in new ideas from the cross-pollination of previously unrelated (to me) topics. Sharing, developing further, these can grow.

Part of the dilemma is that: this can end up wasting time/energy; this can be just little understanding to be much real value.

What do you suggest to focus time and energies, yet not lose the ability to explore these new areas?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The real value of exploring new areas and letting new ideas cross-pollinate often takes times to materialise. It worths its while not only for its potential opportunities, but also the joy of discovering new things.

1. 80/20 rule: get the information source that will aggregate the new insights
Depends on your interest area, some of the good examples are:
Techcrunch
O’Reilly Radar
Jane’s E-learning pick of the day; emphasis is on E-learning
Holy Kaw of Alltop, by Guy Kawasaki; it is more general in scope, not only internet.
Seth Godin’s blog
Scobleizer
Geek News
Masable
Trendhunter

These speed up the learning of new things.

2. Automates info-gathering, search and aggregation
Use for examples RSS readers, subscription of newsletter, Twitter etc.

3. Join discussion group of similar interest
learn from others’ ideas fast. Medici Effect.

4. Browse, save and ability to search the info when need
I just found this useful application today:
http://www.ibrii.com/

5. think fo ways to get reward from your exploration efficiently
Examples of these will be write blogs, articles, answer question, give talks, give consultancy service etc.
The websites in item 1 are making big profits earning from their “exploration”.
There are also crowdsourcing websites where you can sell your ideas to company but be careful though, you will lose the rights to do it yourself.

What are your areas of interests ? maybe we can share our insights.
source(s):
opinions, websites mentioned in texts.
