With an NDM-1 case now confirmed in Brampton, Ontario, should Canadians be worried?

The article I've included below states that the patient in Brampton had contracted the enzyme in India. Should people in Canada be worried, or are people who haven't been to India still pretty safe?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

With an NDM-1 case now confirmed in Brampton, Ontario, I don't see any reason that Canadians should worry in the sense that what is really important is that said case has been detected, properly monitored and the patient should be properly isolated in the medical facility he/she is confined to prevent additional transmission.

What needs to be done is to conduct tests on individuals who made contact with the patient for any possible transfer of the enzyme. Furthermore, Canadian health authorities should coordinate with their counterparts in the United Kingdom as far as the proper handling of infected patients and the sanitation of the room occupied by the patient.

Accordingly, "the only way to currently combat the spread of NDM-1 is through surveillance, prompt identification and isolation of infected patients, disinfecting hospital equipment, and thorough hand-hygiene procedures in hospitals. This is going to be a challenge and will require international cooperation."

Now that the first case of NDM-1 has been confirmed in Canada, I believe Canadians should atleast start taking precautions. I am glad health officials are on top of things and taking precautions. I guess you just have to wonder how many people this infected person was in contact with prior to being diagnosed and while they were contagious.

I do not believe Canadians should be in panic mode, however it is time to start taking basic precautions like practicing washing hands more often, staying at home when sick or away from sick people, and building their immune systems.

Vitamin C is great to help boost the immune system, as is eating a healthy diet and exercise. It has been suggested that we, in general, stop overusing antibiotics. Only use antibiotics when necessary, not as a quick fix to get back to work quicker.

We should all know that the antibiotics available may have worked on this Superbug IF we had not been misusing antibiotics since the 1940's when they first came out. Our bodies have seen antibiotics, recognize them and therefore the antibiotics are not as effective as they can be, something to think about. When we REALLY need antibiotics, we need them to work in our systems.

Again, I feel like Canadians should be made aware of the NDM-1 case and start taking precautions, but not be alarmed just yet (and hopefully never.)
