Windows 7 Audio issues: Windows 7 Ultimate running in Sun Virtual Box 3.0.8 on a 3.0GHz iMac 24 inch. Any way to get audio working?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.1). Sun Virtual Box 3.0.8. The guest OS installs fine. Everything else seems to work, but Windows 7 reports that no audio output devices are found. Even after going and installing the recommended RealTek 32 and 64 bit drivers, Windows still does not recognize the drivers. Need a working solution, not just links to existing posts, in order to get the $4 tip. Thanks.

Your question is very specific and I can imagine your frustration, so please don't get mad if my suggestions don't work or they appear to insult your intelligence. I'm not.

I found the links to articles about the RealTek drivers, I'm sure you found the latest version of them so I won't even ask.

I found another article that suggests the AC97 drivers updated after a few restarts. http://jkwarren.info/blogs/index.php/2009/09/01/win7-64-bit-audio-fails-on-sun-virtualbox But his situation is a little different than yours.

Have you had trouble accessing shared folders? That seems to be another problem people are posting about. I won't bore you with that solution since it's not in your question.

It works for some people and not for others with no explanation why. My own experience with M$oft confirms that to be the case. The "fix" I had to use for one of my own problems (updating my faulty copy of Vista SP1 to SP2) involved a long calls over a weeks time and the help they provided (that isn't posted online, and you'll see why) involved turning off all M$oft features/software possible in the Program control panel. Then I was able to install SP2.

The solution was to disable their own software so their own update would take!

I don't know if tweaking with your W7 (aka Vista SP3) is the answer, it may just be that new drivers are needed (which involves waiting for an update)- even though some people are able to use the current ones. Machines that are supposed to be identical sometimes have comparable parts but are actually different.

My new MBPro has an unadvertised faster processor than the ones for sale now because I got one of the first ones shipped. I was very surprised to discover that Snow Leopard installs and runs 32bit by default. You have to force it to boot in 64bit mode (by holding down the 6 and 4 on your keyboard while it boots). There is software to force it to always boot in 64 (freeware) or you can tinker with the plist and make it do it yourself.

Make sure your MacOS is booting in 64bit mode, it may provide a new compatibility level with your VB running W7 64bit.

I hope this information inspires you to find the right solution, since I didn't give you a for sure way of solving the problem directly. Good luck!

P.S. My attempts to dual boot failed, I'm waiting for new drivers too. No rush, I can run it in VMWare if I have to.

Above and beyond the call of Duty.
I would have said just run Parallels or something.

I had a similar issue when loading Windows 7 RTM on a Mac Pro and thus did a blog post on the topic. The fix is to get the latest audio drivers by RealTek.

Take a look: http://www.2s2d.net/2009/05/30/install-windows-7-rc-x64-on-a-mac-pro-with-sun-virtual-box/
