Windows 7 is officially out. Have you used it or going to?

How do you feel it upgrades or possibly downgrades, from your previous Windows experiences? What are your positive and negative thoughts on it?

I have been using the RC1 and the beta before that since early summer (I have the full version, just haven't gotten around to installing it) and I must say, its awesome!! The new task bar is by FAR the best part of 7, as well as all the other little utilities that make it a step above Vista. That being said, I would NOT of bought it as an upgrade to XP, it is not worth the huge price jump for me personally. I can't account to weather or not it would be worth the upgrade from Vista due to the fact that I skipped it and am glad I did now. I am going to use 7 though, and it is possibly the best version of windows yet, but in the end, a lot of the new features are kinda just flair (with the task bar being both flair + tons of functionality) It also depends on what you want to do with it, if you have a laptop, you'll probably want to upgrade to 7 due to the fact that it is 17% more power efficient than Vista on multi-core'd machines according to this slashdot posting:
http://tech.slashdot.org/story/09/10/21/1234214/Windows-7-On-Multicore-mdash-How-Much-Faster

But I would also be aware if I were you that according to a posting in the Register, that if upgrading (verses a hard drive wipe and a fresh install) people are having to remove Itunes and Google toolbar for some unknown reason. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10/21/windows_7_reader_reviews/

also, XP is still superior in my eyes for the purpose of gaming, but if its a choice strictly between vista and 7 for gaming, go with 7

so yea, cliff notes: Win7 > vista, but not for gaming, and you should upgrade if you have vista and don't mind spending the money.

EDIT: also, if you are getting a new computer with Win7 on it, keep Win7, its totally worth it then.

I've tried it and definitely I think it upgrades significantly from Windows Vista. I love the new taskbar and like @blitza the Aero Shake and Aero Peek tools.

As I haven't got it, I cannot say about the performance and battery life - but from reviews I believe that it is definitely positive and visually Windows 7 is beautiful.

I love the quote from Engadget: "Windows 7 was able to tally up more sales in the first 8 hours of pre-order availability than Vista was able to collect altogether."

You can visit the article here:

I have been running W7beta and now W7RC on three dell systems (all three years old). Since I registerd for the launch party, I got a Signature edition W7U and have already installed it and like it a lot. It is the best Windows OS with lots of new features.

I miss a few features from XP - like video capture using movie maker. for some reasons W7 version doesnt support that.

I used Vista U and the only annoyance I had like everyone else was the UAC, I didnt have any compatibility issues. Otherwise, Vista is a good OS.

I've been using Vista for almost 3 years now and never thought I'd get used to it. Well, now I am and then this new Windows 7 version pops up! I like the sound of it, but am I willing to start all over again with a new version? You betcha! I need a new laptop anyway!

Oh wait a minute - Can I update my old Vista with Windows 7? I am soooooo not a computer geek :-)

Speaking of helpless, how DO I get that little "Tip spatulas_corkscrews for this answer" do-hicky to show up in my answer? I want one too!

I am so needy. *slinks away into a corner*

Hey there - Yes, you can update your old Vista with Windows 7!

You may want to have a look at some info on the Microsoft website: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx

I am not impressed with windows 7. I want to see something new and innovative that is advancing tech not something that just fixes problems that Vista had. I tried it out in beta and RC but I just went back to XP.

I have been using Windows 7 from the beta since about February.

It's the best Operating System I've used in my life. I also have OS X 10.5.8 installed on a computer but Windows 7 is just fantastic. I love it.

If you use a computer with Windows you should not hesitate to go out NOW and get Windows 7. You will not be sorry!

On today's Windows Weekly with Leo Laporte, Paul Thurrott announced you can install Windows 7 Upgrade on a blank PC and not require a previous Windows cd/dvd or Product Key.

I've been using the release candidate on a 3 year old desktop with great success. Very clean, and no issue so far beside my VPN client (cisco) being a little flaky.

I've been using the pre-release candidate for months. It's just Vista SP3. The only issues are outdated drivers on older programs/devices.

Dell is supposed to be mailing me the copy that was part of the deal for my laptop. Hopefully, I'll get it soon. I hear it has backward compatibility with XP programs, so that would be a big plus for me. I have some programs that just don't work with Vista, and I can't afford to upgrade.

I'll back up my whole system first, but I'll definitely be trying it. I have friends who were beta testers and got their versions that way, and they like it.

I've actually been using it on my computer for a while now, and I work at an electronics store and did all the set up on all of the Windows 7 computers we are selling. I definitely like Windows 7, as many people have said the task bar is one of the biggest improvements. I also think that Windows 7 will give those anti-Vista people an opportunity to use a lot of their devices and software from their XP computers. The only problem is the XP compatibility is only included in the Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate versions, and most computers will come with the Home Premium version. I still think that many people who love XP will not have a problem with purchasing an upgrade to continue using their older software and peripherals.
I highly doubt there will ever be an operating system that people will be completely satisfied with, but Windows 7 is definitely a step in the right direction. Microsoft seems to have learned from their mistakes they made with Vista, and they have payed attention to the complaints people had. I think it's a strong operating system, and it seems to run very smoothly and efficiently.

I've been using the different flavors of Windows 7 as they have come out, from the beta release to the retail release that finally shipped today (finalizing the install on my main desktop as I write this), and I have to say that Windows 7 is the first flavor of Windows that Microsoft has released in recent times that I would be willing to recommend to people without saying the "oh, you should wait until SP1 is released" comment that seems to follow any mention of a new Windows release.

I was worried more about my wife using Windows 7 than myself, as my wife seems to take to change a little worse, at least when it comes to computers, than I do.  I have to say, she enjoyed using it so much that after only a few days, she asked me to remove the dual-boot between Windows 7 and Vista that I had set up for her and she has used nothing but Windows 7 since.

It's major changes like the new/improved taskbar, to little things like being able to watch internet tv via Windows Media Center that honestly make having Windows 7 enjoyable.  It's nice to not have to deal with uninstalling Windows Mail before I install Outlook (as Windows Mail is part of Windows Live Essentials now).

To those who are sitting on the fence whether they should upgrade, I say do the upgrade!  If you're already running Vista, going to Windows 7 is going to be an easy transition for you.  If you are one of those people who are still running Windows XP, it's time to let XP go into that good night and join those of us using a modern operating system.

I've been using it in my laptop and so far so good. ^^ At first I hesitated to use it and have some friends use it first (I thought it would be as bad as Vista, lol), but after hearing great reviews from them, I started using it too.

The only problem I encountered maybe is I have to reinstall some drivers again. But I think it's worth it. ^^

Bought a copy last night on Amazon. Looking forward to giving it a run.

Ended up getting the Ultimate edition, probably don't need most of the features but wanted everything either way.

Ive been using the ultimate version, runs fine, havent had any compatibility problems at all.
the new uac is better, and some of the new aero features, like aero peek, and aero shake, are very helpful.
the performance upgrades are noticeable, and the visual upgrades have done alot for it.

i think we might have the best windows platform yet

Yes. Many improvements, backwards compatible, not processor-intensive like Vista. Not a RAM hog. Those who know what they are talking about say it's awesome.

I am going to use it when I buy a new Dell this winter and am rather looking forward to it. I understand virus scan (formerly windows live) will be included in the OS. I like the aero look and it's snappy and sharp. This is coming from a Mac user of long time. I used both so as long as it doesn't crash constantly and choke up like my previous machines I will be glad to try it.
