Will you participate in the Youtube blackout on December 19th?

Many Youtube users are organizing a day long boycott of Youtube in protest of the increased levels of censorship implemented by the site administration. Alternative media sources including the Alex Jones radio show have endoresed this action. Do you agree and will you participate?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I won't have time to spend on YouTube on the 19th anyway. The blackout makes sense, but I doubt it will have any effect on Google. The only way to force YouTube to change is to get them a real competitor. They are in a situation of monopoly and that's never good.

Stuff like this falls under the category of "slacktivism". It's a kind of false activism that doesn't really accomplish anything--another example is not buying gasoline on a certain day. The term "slacktivism" is also used because this kind of "protest" is nearly effortless, and therefore was coined as a portmanteau of "slacker" and "activism".

If everyone sees what they were going to see on the 19th on the 20th or 21st, what difference will it make overall? Think about it.

That said, it should be pretty obvious I'm not going to be taking part. If one really wishes to protest, they should make calls, write letters, that sort of thing. That's what gets companies' attention.

No.

If people don't like the censorship, then they should pay up for their own bandwidth and post their videos there.

YouTube is free. Take it or leave it based on their rules. They have to walk the fine line of risking the lawsuits.

If you don't like them, post your videos....

Oh yeah, there is no where else. So, I don't think the blackout will change anything.

Are there any specific acts of censorship other then those that YouTube has to carry out on behalf of copyright holders (such as Colbert Report clips), or things like pornography and the like?

Also isn't it a bit ironic to use a YouTube video to advertise about a campaign to not use YouTube. Kind of offsets the numbers, if they're even great enough to make an impact. It would have been nice if the video addressed just what YouTubes supposed over-reaching censorship was affecting?

So no I guess I won't be participating. And if I did, I'd be like everyone else and watch everything I missed the day after.

There is no reason YouTube shouldn't be allowed to censor what they want. I understand that they can, will, have, and continue to "censor" material. I find it surprising that people insist on using YouTube in spite of this if they feel strongly about the issue. Is YouTube offering something you cannot find anywhere else? I don't understand why these media creators don't just host all video locally. If it's a cost issue, I don't understand why people feel entitled to free bandwidth for all material. Google needs to do what is in the best interest of the company, and that means that some content seen as negative by other countries will be censored in that country.

I disagree with censorship of any kind, but if they want to censor people, they should integrate a separate section for the more "seedy" videos that they don't want people to see typically. However, I won't be participating in the blackout because I don't use the site. That may mean, though, that it makes it really easy for me to "black it out".

Exactly. I also didn't know that there was gonna be a blackout protest till I read it here. I think this is gonna be a useless protest since not a lot of people know about it.

While I may get frustrated sometimes with YouTube, I can totally understand why they have limits and censorship. No blackout here for me!
