Will we ever see unity in Washington in our lifetimes?

There seems to be a lot of one party going against the other often.
Tip for best answer: M$0.35
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The question deserves to be answered on two levels. First, as @albanian mentions, that's not how our democracy works. The whole notion of "checks and balances" that is at the base of US democracy is predicated on the push and pull of competing interests, be they party-related, or other, to dampen out temporary insanity and allow the republic to proceed day in and day out, year in and year out, without making too many mistakes of epic proportions.

On a deeper level, the answer is that yes, we will, just as we have in the past, have instances of unity between the two major parties. One example was the reaction to the events of 9/11/01. However, these instances of unity are short-lived, as the waves of the political process continue to pound at the beaches of any island of unity until it goes below the surface, only to be brought back up when the next volcanic eruption pushes it up.

That is simply for show. There already is unity in Washington. The problem is that they are unified by corporate interests, including the wall street banks, and are acting in a unified fashion to support what they (the bankers and corporate executives) want, and they are not acting to do what is best for the US or for the rest of us.

Bummer.

No. There will never be unity in Washington. That is not how Democracy works. The closest thing American democracy had to unity was the election of President Washington. But, then the capital was New York City.
