Will there ever by an actual World Hockey League, with teams competing from both Americas, Europe, Asia and [Africa]n continents
The National Hockey League originally consisted of players from Canada and the United States on teams representing cities in Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Detroit, Boston and New York. Even then the wide majority of players were Canadian. As Hockey grew in the USA, more American players made their way into the professional ranks as did a few European players. Then with expansion and the teams searching for more talent, the European market was tapped. With the advent of the KHL and its billionaire backing the NHL has lost a few players, mostly aging stars. Then in 2009 Jiri Hudler of the Detroit Red Wings accepted a 2 year all taxes paid contract worth 10 million dollars to play with Moscow Dynamo, after rejecting the Wings offer of 15 million dollars for 5 years. Do you foresee the possibility of a World Hockey League with maybe even teams from Canada and the United Stated being represented and based in Europe, but playing on multiple continents? The attached video is of a KHL brawl that ended the game after 4 minutes.

I like the idea of a World Hockey League but unfortunately that will never happen. There would be too many problems associated with running such a league. Teams would have to travel all around the world. It is hard enough now for some of the Western teams such as the Vancouver Canucks. There may also be visa problems with some of the players. Even though the KHL is looking like a potential threat to the success of the NHL, the competition will hopefully help more than hurt the league. At the moment, none of the superstars like Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin have flown across the ocean yet, so the NHL doesn’t have anything to worry about yet. It is also very difficult for just one person to finance an entire league, as is the case with the KHL. Unless the league continues to flourish, he will run out of money soon.
