Will there ever be a third Star Wars trilogy?

Doubtful. There is a page on the Wookiepedia concerning all the speculation and reports of a 3rd trilogy from Lucas back between 1978 and 1994.

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Sequel_trilogy
-----quote----
Some fans have come to the erroneous conclusion that the Star Wars novels set after Return of the Jedi, most notably the Thrawn Trilogy or the New Jedi Order series, represent the "real" Episodes VII through IX—either believing that they will be made into films in the future, or believing that they are novelizations of unproduced scripts.
----/quote----

In my opinion, the "3rd trilogy" is the Thrawn trilogy.

Great links, Star Wars seems like one of those stories that could go on forever, they should just turn it into a daily hour long show.. like soap operas... but better and tailored to me :D

While I believe it's doubtful, I'd love to think so.

While George Lucas's vision has been realized, there is obviously a huge following, myself included. And of course, that following has written lots of books about other Jedi and Sith, both before and after Luke's time. There's games that we've played that have their own story line and all kinds of ideas and dreams of the Star Wars universe that are begging to be told, especially on the big screen.
However, again, Lucas's vison has been realized, and I doubt he's going to want to go there any more - which is sad. I wish he would consider it.

After all, there are so many other Jedi out there...

I'll answer like this: I sincerely HOPE so. I'd be first in line.

I dont think they will continue the trilogy. Idont think they should either. Dont get me wrong, I am a huge fan, but there would be a different cast, and i honestly don't believe there is anyone else who can replacfe those characters. They will once in a while release minor gifts, (action figures, videos, etc.) but they will never add onto the trilogy.

they said it is very likely to happen due to the after market production of star wars. but i doubt that it will be directed by george lucas though.

"Ever" is a long time. :)

I think there could be further movies after a long break. It's a very lucrative franchise with an enormous fan base, and there would seem to be lots of room to tell new stories.

Things like Star Trek and Doctor Who have been revived after long breaks when everyone involved thought they were gone for ever.

I think the only show stopper would be if George Lucas, who seems to hold the key property rights, felt that his work was perfect and complete and should never be sullied by any more movies. Given all the stuff they do allow, it seems unlikely that he feels quite so absolutely about it.

So my bet is after a long enough period that it can seem fresh again, there will be more movies.

It's just too much money for Hollywood to leave on the table untapped.

Just hope that if and when they make new ones, they are worthy ones.

I doubt it highly, it seems like it's been ended by the sith... if they ever did continue it would have to be a completely new idea and a completely new structure or basis to build off of, because for me, star wars has been topped off. I enjoyed the series, but to watch them again it would just drive me.

The battle between the Jedi and Sith is an ancient one, and has been fought on many fronts. I doubt it is truly over at the end of Return of the Jedi. The books have the saga continuing with Leia/Han's children, one of which becomes a Sith.

I have heard that George Lucas will let his kid do it (after he suitably vettes the plot, etc).

I think it will come within the next 3-5 years, it's something to keep an eye out for.
