Will there come a point where media begins to lose influence over public opinion?

If the media got behind something...like say a food...and it was later found out that the food had dangerous additives that caused people to get sick, it might tip the scales a little bit. If it was found out that the media got behind the food due to corporate payoffs, it would tip the scale more. To significantly tip the scale, there would have to be hundreds of thousands of people that were sick or died from it.
It must be kept in mind that people know that the media is at least a little shifty. The problem is that it would have to take something so earth-shattering that no one could have thought about it before to make a true difference.
Take the government for example. Granted, a lot of people to not like the US government, but people let a lot of major things pass because they mentally do not want to accept certain things that the government does, or has done. People appear to forget things that the government has done to support their sense of security.
While waterboarding has not been forgotten, something like Project MKUltra has been. The average person either does not know about, or has forgotten that Congress found out decades ago that the CIA and military had experiemented with mind-altering substances on people. People have forgotten over the years about Project Paperclip which brought over Nazi scientists and war criminals after WWII.
The media will continue to influence people for many years to come. Granted, the level of influence might change a little over time, but the influence will still remian. People might lower their viewership of opinion news shows at some point, but the latent opinions will still be there.

M$Media is here to stay and will continue to increase in power because of social network sites. We have a forum now to discuss what we've heard. Before we only had work or church or any social event where you gathered with your friends.
Technology now keeps us all informed in the moment something happens and the power of that information grows as social networking spreads. Public opinion can be swayed by media because it's the queen bee in our little hives of daily life.
