Will there come a point where media begins to lose influence over public opinion?

I have the impression that media has more influence over world politics and opinion today then ever before. Will we reach a point where this momentum begins to decrease? If so, why?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There would need to be a major event, or series of events that would cause something like this to happen. Since an event like this has never happened before, I would have to put on my old political consultant thinking hat to even come up with some possible scenarios.

If the media got behind something...like say a food...and it was later found out that the food had dangerous additives that caused people to get sick, it might tip the scales a little bit. If it was found out that the media got behind the food due to corporate payoffs, it would tip the scale more. To significantly tip the scale, there would have to be hundreds of thousands of people that were sick or died from it.

It must be kept in mind that people know that the media is at least a little shifty. The problem is that it would have to take something so earth-shattering that no one could have thought about it before to make a true difference.

Take the government for example. Granted, a lot of people to not like the US government, but people let a lot of major things pass because they mentally do not want to accept certain things that the government does, or has done. People appear to forget things that the government has done to support their sense of security.

While waterboarding has not been forgotten, something like Project MKUltra has been. The average person either does not know about, or has forgotten that Congress found out decades ago that the CIA and military had experiemented with mind-altering substances on people. People have forgotten over the years about Project Paperclip which brought over Nazi scientists and war criminals after WWII.

The media will continue to influence people for many years to come. Granted, the level of influence might change a little over time, but the influence will still remian. People might lower their viewership of opinion news shows at some point, but the latent opinions will still be there.

Think of us as a hive of bees and we're busy gossiping, talking and socializing one with another. The media "print, news, polls, etc." then gives us a topic to talk about at the water cooler inside the hive. With social networking we can now increase the power of the media and spread "fear of bad economy" or "fear of war not ending" and so on.

Media is here to stay and will continue to increase in power because of social network sites. We have a forum now to discuss what we've heard. Before we only had work or church or any social event where you gathered with your friends.

Technology now keeps us all informed in the moment something happens and the power of that information grows as social networking spreads. Public opinion can be swayed by media because it's the queen bee in our little hives of daily life.
