One of the biggest problems we have is overpopulation of humans. If the population of humans continue to grow as it does, there will not be enough room to grow food for people. Some nations that have deserts cannot support such a large population, because of the infertile ground. So if people were to slow down on having children that would certainly put a dent in poverty and starvation, because people would only be having as many children as they, or the land can support.

This slowing down on having children is very hard to come by, sometimes because of religious views, or cultural views. In many Christian groups it is forbidden to use birth control. It is also forbidden to reject your husband for sexual reasoning, go figure, it's Christians. So as hard as women try to only have sex during a certain part of their cycle, if the husband wants her when she is more capable of becoming pregnant, she cannot stop this. And more than likely she will become pregnant. Of course abortions are also forbidden, so they are stuck with a child that they may or may not have wanted in the first place, and may or may not be able to support.

Another issue is that many people no longer own land. So they can not produce their own food. They must wait to buy food from a company that will overcharge them on this food, and they may or may not be able to afford this expensive food. I love the idea of community gardens, even if you have to rent the plot. A bell pepper should not cost $3.99 a pound! And don't give me the excuse of gardening is difficult. It really is not. All you do is put seeds in the ground and water now and again. OK, so there is a little weeding to do, but that's not hard. I am a prime example of that, this summer I worked on three gardens, certainly two of them were small, and I wasn't the only one who worked on the big garden, but it is still easy.

Many people over eat. I know I do. I hardly go a couple of hours at a time feeling hungry. So if we all simply just eat less, there will be more food to go around. That is not to say that this food we do not eat will be eaten by others. There is a solution in Japan that I found to be very interesting. If grocers or restaurants have food that is about to go bad, they donate it to soup kitchens. The homeless people rotate work in the soup kitchens. There is very little waste this way, and people get fed.

No we are living in a curse world, unless corruption and a desire selfish for power, I think poverty will not removed or eliminated from the Earth.

Unfortunately, you are so right on the real cause of problem. It is we the humans that can be held responsible for this problem. To get rid of this issue we should join and help each other in eliminating these evils not only by donating cash and in kind but should make the needy ones capable of self dependent. We should put stop on overuse of cattle raising just for meat and leather goods(for leisure). Avoid commercializing important food related articles(stock trading in exchanges) like grains etc. WE SERIOUSLY NEED TO MEND OUR GREED BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

MY HEARTFELT THANKS TO ALL OF THE GUYS WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THIS DISCUSSION HERE. I WILL LIKE THEM KEEP SHARING THERE THOUGHTS HERE, REGARDLESS OF ANY REWARD FOR THE SAKE OF HUMANITY.

I sadly do not see this happening anytime soon.

One thing that could help with the problem of hunger, would be to stop using food products (such as corn) to make fuel.

Most of the corn products used to make fuel are inedible bio-engineered forms of corn.
Watch the movie, King Corn. Most of the corn grown in the country is not edible. We shouldn't be growing corn anyway.

I agree with you placebofan. We should grow soy, it has more edible nutrients.

Read "Diet for a Small Planet." I know there are meat lovers out there, but most of the world can't afford to eat meat, and does so very rarely. Just Cows alone contribute enough methane to destroy ozone levels. By the way, I wonder how many cows were in America before the Colonists took over. At one point, the Wild Wild West had roaming herds of buffalo and enough grizzlys to shake a stick at. We are now up to the sky with condos and pre-packaged food and tons and tons of fast food joints, selling cowburgers.....

If you live in India, the cow is sacred and those herds are never thinned out. USA cows are not the problem.

Good point nancy.

I am still trying to find a way to eat less. I find when I cook I try to incorporate a LOT of vegetables, and just a little meat. When my husband cooks he really cooks a lot of meat and little if any veggies. He likes his bbq beef we just had, or pulled pork that he likes very much. I like Curry - a little meat, a lot veggies and rice. If I could eat curry everyday I would...though my husband wouldn't like that too much. :(

So I don't want to go full blown vegetarian, vegan...etc. I just simply want to eat less meat. I don't know if I can get him on the band wagon though. When I suggest it, he comes back with, I like my meat. I tell him, we'd still be eating meat...

Any suggestions?

I agree with some of your points, about how everyone should eat less meat.

I don't like the methane argument though. Lots of veggies give people gas, which is gas that is not good for the ozone either. Just because people eat less meat, doesn't mean there will be less gas. Maybe we should be feeding our meat something that doesn't give it so much gas in the first place?

I believe that we will always have hunger and poverty. Hunger and Poverty have plagued the earth since the beginning of time. There are still under developed countries, children dying of starvation, uneducated people, homeless people and disease. Unless the world can come together and find a common ground, this will always be. I don't have much myself but will always help someone in need, even if it means that I go without. If those that are wealthy would donate even 10% of their income each year to an under developed society, the world would be much better off. People are stock piling their money, even though they have enough to last 10 lifetimes. The only way to solve this is by the wealthy helping the poor. They need to let go of their greed and help someone that wants to eat every day. People need to help people because our Governments will never see eye to eye.

In my opinnion:

I have HOPE for the world to become a better place, removing poverty & all the negative things of the world. It's so hard for it to happen with people not BELIEVING though. All teenagers seam to really care about is smoking, drinking, partying. I think to CHANGE the world we need to focus on the children and create bright futures for them to create change for the world. Thats why it's so important for us to all put a hand into fixing the world.

"smoking, drinking, partying", only happens in 'developed' cultures. The Hmong went without all of these three things until we became refugees in developed countries.

If by "world" you mean humans as a society, then absolutely not. As a human race we will never be able to rid the world of poverty and hunger. History has proven that no matter what form of government is experimented with, it always fails. Egypt, Assyria, Medo-Persia, Greece, Rome, Britain, United States, all have accomplished some good things to improve their world at the time but all have ultimately failed in attempting to solve poverty and hunger. Humans are inherently selfish and greedy and therefore incapable of ruling themselves. Even if a selfless and humble individual gains power, the person is either corrupted by the society we live in or only governs for a short time and then is replaced by the next self-interested individual.

I don't want this answer to seem pessimistic, it's just realistic. The world is spiraling out of control. But not all is lost. There is a hope for the future. It just doesn't reside with anything we can do ourselves.

World hunger will never end until the majority of the planet’s citizens make it a priority. It’s not easy, but if everyone would sacrifice a little, (monetary) we could pool that money and create resources and solutions to this problem.

The problem is and has always been world hunger is not a priority. Instead, we’re worried about acquiring resources that make us money instead of trying to focus on helping others.

While there will always be obstacles in our way like a booming population, bad soil for farming, lack of infrastructure and corruption (to name a few) if we made solving world hunger our primary focus, we could do a lot to solve it. We have the resources, the intelligence and the technology in place to make huge strides in reducing and eventually eliminating world hunger.

When we see this as a responsibility and not a problem, then we can get to work on it.

I love the idea of charity, but the mass majority of us don't make that much money to start with. I barely make $20K a year, and if I wasn't with my husband, I would need a second job to survive.

It would be great if we could share other resources. Say someone owns a chunk of land that they don't use. Let someone else use it to grow food! Like at our apartment. The land went unused for years, until we came along. No one goes in that part of the yard anyways, and it gets plenty of sun.

We unfortunely were not able to use all of the veggies that came out of it, so we gave some away, as a form of bartering. It worked out great!

No to both. Here's why. We now procreate at a fast and multiplying rate. As the people multiply, we use up resources and food supplies. Some years we have extreme famine, other years are plentiful. Wealthy nations "share" but we still allow a large amount of waste. Poverty is always going to be a problem- even in a nation like the US where I live, we still have the poor and hungry on the streets. There is just no way to wipe that out, because it depends on the individual as much as on the government and help of others.

Karl Marx tried to give the solution to these problems with the creation of his doctrine of scientific communism, but as we all know, his improvised and capricious followers failed in its application.
The current capitalist system itself generates social differences that lead to rich, middle class and poor. The only solution could be to implement a true scientific communism as the one created by Marx and his disciple Friedrich Engels, but unadulterated.
I recommend to read The Communist Manifesto of Marx to have an initial approach to the original marxist thought, without contamination.

Well if all of the people in power and those who are wealthy will work together poverty and hunger can very well be eradicated.

A lot of corruption is happening in many countries around the world if that alone is eliminated all those money that go to a few corrupt people in power can very well support those who are hungry and needy.

Think of how much money is being stolen by corrupt government officials; money that can construct schools, bridges, hospitals, and other infrastructures are worth billions (what ever country or currency it maybe). That amount of money can provide jobs, farming opportunities, scholarships, etc. Which can help people rise from poverty and live a descent life.

I believe that can still happen with the effort of good hearted men and if everyone would strive to address that problem it will happen.
