Will the US become involved with the Korean War?
The short answer to this is that the US is already involved in the Korean War. However this does not mean that we are in a ‘hot war’. The Korean ‘hot’ war lasted from 1950 thru 1953 when an armistice was signed. It was a proxy war, where the US supported the South Koreans, and China and the USSR supported the North. Since the armistice, there have been a few incidents, but no real hostilities until a couple of weeks ago, when the North Koreans shelled a small South Korean island.
The question now is whether the war will turn ‘hot.’ The US is now the only true military power in the world, which is why we have been involved in several wars, including Vietnam, Grenada, and two incursions into Iraq. We are committed to aiding the South Koreans against any aggression. North Korea is a dirt-poor country led by an unstable dictator. It has a large army, and rudimentary nuclear capability. The US has 25,000 troops stationed in the South.
The US is in a difficult position for several reasons. Currently, our economy is shaky, and we are expensively involved in Afghanistan and Iraq. However, the greatest difficulty lies with China, and what its intentions might be. China’s economy recently surpassed that of Japan, and it has a large army and a significant nuclear capacity. The US is currently trying to solve the Korean problem by diplomacy.
My personal opinion is that this crisis will pass, although there will be others in the region in future. I believe that China will exert behind-the scenes pressure on its unstable ally, North Korea, to ramp down the pressure on the South. China is an up-and-coming country with a lot to lose in the event of hostilities. The situation, however, is dangerous.
