Will the Secret Service be able to protect President Obama?

After the "shoe incident" with Bush, will the Secret Service be able to regroup and draw up a strategy to protect Obama? Specially when Obama is the first black US President and faces a very dangerous 4 years...

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Yes, I think the Secret Service can protect Obama.

Even though the shoe incident occurred, it actually shows how well they are doing their job. The journalist who assaulted Bush didn't attack him with a weapon, it was a shoe. The chances of him hitting bush were pretty low, even if Mr. President wasn't a good dodger. If Bush was hit, he would maybe have gotten a concussion. He would definitely have survived the attack.

Second, the Secret Service has already uncovered plots against Obama, and neutralized those threats. This means that they are already taking great pains to protect him and investigate credible threats.

I also think the shoe incident is going to make the Secret Service take a good look at their current operations, which can only help them do a better job protecting both Bush and Obama.

It's a win-win-win: Bush gets better protection, Obama gets better protection, and we get a funny story about President Bush in which he comes out just fine in the end.

Life doesn't come with any guarantees. But I think we are safe in assuming that they will do everything in their power to protect him.

But it's not just the secret service's job to protect him. It's our job too. I don't mean we should go out sleuthing, or that we should phone the FBI every time we get worried. But when people start using hate speech toward the president, are you going to just listen, or are you going to ask them questions? If you can get them to stop and think, and to realize that not everybody agrees with them, you're sucking some of the wind out of their sails.

It may seem like a small thing, but when we allow America to be a safe space for racial hatreds, we allow America to become more dangerous. People have to psych themselves up to do evil things, and the mere act of letting some of the wind out of their sails can make the difference between them having a bad thought and them acting on it.

Yes, but they may increase the level of protection when speaking before the press in foreign countries

They already are! Of course they can.

You can't blame the secret service for the "shoe incident". You can't make all the press interviews into nude events.

I'm sure they had laid out all the possible scenarios in specific events and places that the president is going to be in. It's a tough job indeed. I just wonder how much they get paid.
