Will the Palm Pre cause a legal dispute with Apple over multitouch technology?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Actually I think that both Palm and Apple licensed their "multi-touch" technologies from third parties. Not to mention it's difficult to patent something like this. The only thing you can actually patent is the technology behind this. I forget why but you can't patent the actually gestures used.

I read several articles on this and there is no clear consensus. I'm looking forward to seeing the other answers.

my understanding is that multitouch technology is not owned by apple.

It's hard to say just yet. Once the product comes out, we'll know if there have been any patent or IP infringements. If Apple thinks that's the case, they'll most definitely pursue Pre. I'm sure Palm's lawyers went on lengths to figure out which patents Apple filed for iPhone/iPod Touch, and be sure not to infringe.
So, as soon as a demo unit is available, or enough info is released, we'll hear more activity on various blogs, and opinion sites. Also, some movement around both Apple and Palm camps. :)
