Will the Microsoft Pink / Microsoft Kin phone be cooler then the iPhone?
Today, Microsoft will release a new mobile phone that has been code named Project Pink. Officially named the Microsoft Kin this phone will have some pretty cool features.
Do you think that this phone will be cooler than the iPhone? Will it be built for business to overtake the Blackberry? Will geeks like it as much as the Motorola Droid? Or, do you think that it will simply fill market share and become a reasonably priced smartphone?

The phones are essentially slight remakes of the Palm Pre and the Sidekick phones, which both were pretty successful. Additionally, with Microsoft under the phone's production - their success should be pretty high.
Predominantly, the feature which struck me so much was the memory. At first, looking at the 4GB and 8GB specs, I was a little surprised and wary. Until I realised that memory on the phone is more advanced. In fact, the Microsoft Kin phones have (in some respects) unlimited memory, for they backup everything from videos and photos to even texts and contact details on the online Kin 'studio' (database). This feature is incredible, especially for those (like me) who have lost their phone and lost all the contact details, then having to desperately find numbers on Facebook and MSN.
The Microsoft Kin One (right in picture) is very small, when the keyboard is not extended, so it can easily fit in a pocket. It's light and very simple, aimed predominantly at a more younger market with its compact keyboard for quick texting and easy portability.
The Microsoft Kin Two (left) is larger, with a bigger keyboard, better camera (HD, 8 megapixels) and a larger screen to surf the web and read emails, targeted more at a older audience for better and larger features.
Microsoft Kin, however, have designed the phone cleverly. Essentially the iPhone is more focused on its Apps and having multiple features. Microsoft Kin, is more to the point, a phone with a camera, web browser and the essentials. It's simplicity will attract significantly and will exceed other phones in the more 'phone' market than the 'smartphone' section.

M$It will turn out that Pink is to iPhone as Myspace is to Facebook.
The thing that is geared to a specific audience that likes that look and that feature set will lose out to something that most people like, and has an even larger and more widely useful feature set. At best it's a niche thing, not any challenge to the iPhone.
Part of what makes Apple and Facebook the successes they are is they have a genius for positioning themselves in such a way that they are hip enough for the hip, professional enough for the professional, cool enough for the kids, and grown up enough for the adults.
I'm not embarrassed to pull an iPhone out in a business meeting, and kids half my age are not embarrassed to be seen with one while out hanging with their friends. Ditto for Facebook.
