Will Phil Mickelson take over from Tiger Woods as world number at this weeks US Open?
Tiger Woods has been the number one golfer in the world for the last five years, but with his recent troubles and form, and the excellent performances from Phil Mickleson, there's a good chance that we could have a new number one soon. Will Phil Mickelson take over from Tiger Woods as world number at this weeks US Open? or will some other golfer, perhaps Westwood, be crowned world number one?

According to the official World Golf Rankings...
"wins he’s the new number 1
Phil is 2nd alone then he’s number 1 if Tiger is outside the Top 4
Phil is 3rd alone then he’s number 1 if Tiger is outside the Top 18
If Tiger misses the cut then the minimum Phil needs is a 2 way tie for third place to become World Number One.
Lee Westwood has the World Number 2 spot within his sights but he must win the US Open with Phil Mickelson finishing outside the Top 3."
With Mickelson at 5 over par after the first round and Woods 4 shots ahead of him, I wouldn't put my money on Mickelson overcoming Woods this week. The key will be the second round. Should Mickelson have a good second round and go into the weekend neck and neck with Woods, then the game is on and he very well could surpass him.
