Will oak tree leaves provide a good compost for a garden?

What are the benefits of using leaves as compost? Do the nutrients in leaves help gardens grow better?

Yes, oak leaves can make a great compost, actually. They do take longer to break down in the compost bin or heap, however. Perhaps as long as 6 months! To hasten the break down in the compost, shred the leaves as best as you can. Another trick is to add a lot of 'green' to the pile. Grass clippings are a good source for a hot compost pile. Be sure the leaves are not from a diseased tree, however. If you need the compost quickly, you can use 'unfinished' leaves, just layer them into the existing soil, and they will finish their composting underground.

Oak leaves are a good nutritional source for your garden, and composting will save you lots of trash bags, dump fees, or burning time.
