Will NASA find evidence of water on the moon?

Do you think the moon once had water?

The Indian probe Chandrayaan has already found strong evidence of water on the moon, and NASA agrees with the interpretation of those findings.

In fact, this backs up evidence of water that was found during the Apollo missions, but which no-one believed at the time and instead attributed to contamination of the samples during handling.

As for whether NASA's LCROSS mission will find more evidence of water... I can only quote Albert Einstein...

"If we knew what we were going to find, it wouldn't be called research." :)

The info is in the sources I linked:

The latest discovery came when scientists analysed sunlight glancing off the moon's surface with detectors aboard the Chandrayaan-1 probe, India's first mission to observe the moon. The reflected light was found to be missing infrared wavelengths that are absorbed by water molecules.

The results were backed up by further observations from spectrometers aboard Nasa's Deep Impact and Cassini probes. The research will be published in the US journal Science tomorrow.

What was the evident found by the Indian probe Chandrayaan? Did they discover a wavelength of light matches to wavelengths of light reflected by water? Did the probe get an atmospheric sampling and detected water?

Yes! There's already strong evidence that water exists on the moon. The Sept 25, 2009 issue of Science documents evidence found by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter of lunar polar water ice. The upcoming LCROSS experiment will likely be able to back up the evidence of lunar water.

How do scientist know the lunar polar cap was ice from water? What device allowed them to make the claim of water?

What were the conclusions about the water on the Moon from the last NASA mission?

Is there enough water on the Moon to sustain colonies of people?

There is no polar ice-cap on the moon. What NASA has found was evidence of water ice in the deep shadows of crater walls near the lunar pole, where sunlight never reaches.
