Will mankind ever terraform Mars?

Terraforming is the process of transforming a planet uninhabitable by humans to one approximating Earthly conditions.

I think it's possible, but not likely. I doubt we'll see any progress on this in our lifetimes.

The thing that really intrigues me is what if we do find life on Mars (no, not on ABC or the BBC). What then? Is it ethical for us to wipe out the native bacteria for humanity's purposes?

What makes you think we haven't already, and the government is keeping it hidden?

I believe it could be possible, but the precursor would be fixing Earth's atmosphere. If that's not possible, then I don't think we could modify Mars.

Stephen Hawking supports Mars colonization. That endorsement convinces me that we will be there some day.

If Stephen Hawking says we should do it, then I'm all for it. I remember that time when he said I should try out for the Blue Man Group.

I think the robot idea is probably the most "feasible," but I'm wondering what the Genesis Project in that Star Trek flick used? Was it some sort of capsule or machine?

In 'Total Recall' the martian terraforming was accomplished by means of releasing massive quantities of water into the martian atmosphere -- water which was trapped in the planet's surface already as permafront and simply dormant.

This past year, a Mars probe found frost and ice at the Martian pole, suggesting that indeed there are vast quantities of water trapped in the Martian soil. Thus, if terraforming is possible, the key to it is probably to release this water into the atmosphere on a large scale.

Of course, unlike Arnold (shown below in 'Total Recall'), you'll want to remain indoors until the terraforming is 100% complete.

A major problem of spending the money to terraform Mars is that it lacks a similar solid metal core that could produce a magnetic field to protect humans from the negative effects from solar wind/storms. The cost currently to put 1 lb of material in high Earth orbit is thousands of dollars... to put them into Mar's orbit is many times higher per pound. Another problem is the use of aerobraking, the use of a planet's atmosphere to slow an object enough to make it fall to the ground. Mars has a very thin atmosphere and would be very difficult to land heavy objects safely on the ground of Mars.
