Will Mahalo add an "audit" or "no score" rating to some questions? I'm getting tagged as unhelpful to inane questions!
Good God! We get nonsense questions imported from Twitter...nothing more than rambling looking for attention, then we get hit with "unhelpful" rankings. Not just me...both of us who responded got tagged.
It was a drive-by fruiting!
Seriously...does anyone think the O.P. was really looking for helpful answers?
I think that with these Twitter imports we should be given the option of "audit". Meaning, I don't want a grade, or credit, or a degree in astrophysics. Don't count it _for_ or _against_ me.
Otherwise, I'm going to start ignoring all of the questions that make this community a little more colorful, but don't merit research and notation.
Vanity? A little bit. It was nice to have that 100% Helpful stat greet me every day. Now, my ego is shattered.

I _knew_ I should have followed that Japanese proverb: "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down"
I guess I learned my lesson.
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

M$That being said, a lot of new members may not understand that unhelpful votes affect a user's statistics so try not to take it personally. If you see someone repeatedly voting unhelpful on questions like this, you may want to send them a direct question to let them know why it's uncool.

M$I sympathize and agree with you. I think there should be a way to challange these sorts of things. If someone wrongfully votes you unhelpful, you should be able to contest it. No one wants their record tarnished.
You could also try reasoning with the person who voted you unhelpful. Once someone gave me an unhelpful vote on an opinion based question. I asked them why, and after thinking about it, they decided to change their vote to helpful.
On the same topic, I think we should be able to challenge questions that have been voted "no best answer" when there clearly was a best answer. I have lost out on many tips like this simply because no one voted on the question.

Jason just confirmed that this is one of the issues they are trying to fix for the next version of Mahalo. For now we just have to keep up the voting.

Actually, if no one votes on the question it remains undecided. If the question was decided as 'no best answer' then someone had to have voted for no best answer.
Good Luck!

M$I personally wouldn't stress about the unhelpful mark. Most of the answers that I find that have a higher frequency of unhelpful marks are the religious questions and opinion questions. I personally don't think that people should mark opinion questions as unhelpful or questions where people are talking about their personal beliefs. But then again, that is my opinion. :-)

M$Check out this one, it was prior to the Mahalo vote reveal so there is no way for the common man to tell who did it, but every answer is marked as unhelpful.

wdawe is right, if you get hit by a drive-by downvote it will most likely not have a long lasting effect on your profile. I was sitting 1% non-helpful for awhile and I am back to 100% that's because if you have a 99.5% it will round up.
Helpful and Unhelpful will always be based on users opinions and if that user felt your answer was unhelpful there is not much that can be done. It appears to be a new user and the best we can do is welcome them and educate them on when to use the unhelpful button. They will learn if they stick around the site much longer :D
Someone unhelfulled me on a Swine Flu question, it has now disappeared.
It is always worth taking a moment to see that you really understand what the asker wants. That applies as much to writing a joke answer to what you thought was a lighthearted question as much as anything else.
I do bite my tongue a fair bit when a one liner springs to mind! :)
Tag. One helpful vote for you. Good to hear they will age out. How did you find that out?
