Will John Paul Stevens actually retire from the Supreme Court this year?

When will he make an announcement?
Tip for best answer: M$1.50
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Unfortunately, there is nobody who can provide a definitive answer to this question ahead of time, with the possible exception of Justice Stevens himself. According to a piece in the Huffington Post (see http://www.huffingtonpost.com/carl-jeffers/memo-to-justice-stevens-d_b_527036.html ), Justice Stevens commented in a Washington Post interview, responding to a question on a possible resignation time frame "I will surely do it while Obama is still President." Reportedly, he later made a comment that "at some point you have to fish or cut bait."

According to the Washington Post (see http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36162282/ns/politics-washington_post/ ) the justice also indicated he'd make the decision as to the timing of his resignation soon - "He acknowledged that he had told a reporter early last month that he would decide in about 30 days, but laughed that he hoped "that wasn't being treated as a statute of limitations."" Thus, he may make an announcement any day now, but there are no guarantees on that.

Based on Justice Stevens' comments, it's fair to expect that he will retire either this year, or next year, but as one of my favorite Nils Bohr quote goes: "It's very difficult to make predictions, especially about the future."
