Will I score higher in writing by using more adjectives?

If I use more adjectives will I score higher on a writing test? Are adjectives the key to better scores on writing tests?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Not necessarily! Adjectives are the words that are used to describe a noun -they are meant for tagging an object with its properties for better understanding of the reader/listener but over-using them can lose a reader's trust in you. The reason is simple: have you ever seen those marketing ads/supplements crowded with hundreds of adjectives? The more the adjectives, the lower the weight in your text.

As a standard, use not more than 5-7 adjectives per 5-line paragraph. That roughly translates to 1-2 adjectives per sentence. Remember that works for non-fiction/technical writing. For fiction writing you can go for as many adjectives you want to put into your text but the text should not be crowded with only the adjectives.

The bottom-line is that the use of adjectives looks impressive where necessary, but their over-usage leads to text that gives the impression of being poorly-written or exaggerated. So, no the use of more adjectives would not help you achieve better writing tests scores -it's good vocabulary and good writing style!

Hope it helps!

Writing with precise meaning is certainly better than writing that is less clear. Adjectives can help add precision to meaning. For example, the sentence, “The car zoomed around the corner” is not as precise as “The beat-up car zoomed around the corner.” The second sentence tells us something about the past of the car, namely that it has been through some difficult experiences.
However, merely adding adjectives is not nearly as important as other words. Precise verbs and nouns will help your writing more than simply using adjectives to add meaning. Look at the sentence above. “The car zoomed around the corner” would be more expressive if you replace “car” with “Camaro” or “Thunderbird.” It gives us a clearer image of what kind of car is there. If you change “zoomed” to “barreled” or “raced,” that gives the reader a better idea of what is happening. “Zoom” is pretty good, but it may not be the best.
