Will Google Me be a Facebook killer?

This morning Kevin Rose tweeted "Ok, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch facebook competitor very soon "Google Me", very credible source."

My question is, if Google launched it's own social media site ("Google Me"), would it be able to compete with and surpass Facebook? Why or why not?

Bonus Questions:
Who would you be rooting for to "win the battle"?
Do you trust Google or Facebook more with your privacy?
Tip for best answer: M$3.38
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

It feels to me that when Google tries to be a "Me too!" it doesn't work. Some of my online buddies are using Google's version of Twitter, which is within Google, and it's just ugly. I also don't see them using Buzz exclusively

Of course, it's too early to tell if Google Me will be a good alternative or not, but Wave didn't do much after the initial excitement for it swelled.

Well to be honest, in my opinion neither one of them have a fighting chance in wining when the option is for security or privacy. It is the internet, there is hardly anything that is actually confidential anymore.
If I did have to choose though, I would root for Google more, simply because first there was Myspace, then face book came along and introduced new features and applications and things, so I would be curious to see what Google Me had in store.

I for one will try it out for sure. As long as their features and the overall look and feel hold up, I think it will do quite well. BUT most importantly I hope that the customer service will keep up better than Facebook's ever has such as ignoring the "BAN NOW, ASK QUESTIONS LATER" policy: http://www.mahalo.com/answers/my-facebook-account-was-banned-for-reaching-5-000-friends-im-a-fashion-designer-and-kept-accepting-people-until-it-capped-what-to-do

I think it's too late for Google to take Facebook out with a copycat program. Too many people have their network built within Facebook at this point (this is their main competitive advantage if you ask me). As others have noted, it feels much like Google's Buzz (Google's "Twitter killer" which hasn't really killed much of anything).

I think people are ready to move on from Facebook because of the privacy issues, but there is just to much inertia to overcome. As for who I trust more - I don't think I trust Google more than Facebook - they aren't necessarily better when it comes to privacy...just not as stupid about how they go about on the surface.

IMHO, No. Facebook is Social networking, period. They (Facebook) do it better than anyone. Google is Search, they do it better than anyone. This can all change in time but for the next 10-20 years this will be the landscape.

I agree with you. There are always other options of course, but those two are really the front runners with what they do.

Can we stop using the term Facebook killer? There is no possible way another product/website/or innovation can kill Facebook due to their huge market share. Realize the only way Facebook dies or is defeated is if Facebook makes terrible decisions internally as a company. But Facebook isn't going anywhere...stop thinking that this company can be killed by another competitor.

Google Me at best just wants to take control of the secondary Market Share long term and should be considered a MySpace killer if anything. We should all know by now that Google is not the best company to provide a killer web 2.0 platform. Buzz was a disaster, so why do we think they could do any better when taking on a much larger company, with more pivots than Google can handle?

Just wish more people knew the power, growth and innovation behind Facebook to realize they aren't going anywhere in our lifetime. So please stop using the phrase "Facebook Killer." Thanks.

I agree with everything you say except that Facebook isn't "going anywhere in our lifetime." In internet terms, Facebook will be a dinosaur in 10 years, let alone a few decades!

Haha yeah I might have overstated that...I guess I meant it won't be killed by any other website in our lifetime. It will either implode internally or die as a part of the online cycle. But they are so far ingrained into the web world that they aren't going anytime soon. I think they have a good 15 years ahead if they pivot into certain product areas. Facebook considering the mobile industry, search industry, already has a big foot in the gaming industry. I don't think those industries are going anywhere!

I would try Google Me, but to be a Facebook killer, Google will have to innovate rather than copy.

Some important improvements.
Make it easier for app makers to develop software.
Allow adult content for those that want it.
Gmail-Google Docs integration.

It can be a killer app, but to have draw it has to be more than a clone.

@cheapgamer If you think about it, Facebook was completely different than MySpace, and Twitter is completely different than Facebook. Google would be better off not trying to copying Twitter or Facebook, and instead work on something new!

I agree, which is why I don't see Bing ever catching up to Google. Once a company is dominating something, copying won't cut it.

What's a Bing? ;o) I kid I kid.

Seriously, I could not agree with you more, if it is a carbon copy there is no motivation to switch.

Not sure if it will be a killer (remember Orkut, Google Wave and more recently Google Buzz -- each an attempt at "the social") but the added competition to Facebook is good. It will create competition and keep them in their place. And if someone is to challenge Facebook, why not Google?

This is hard to answer right now as there's no Google Me yet. Unless we can see what Google Me does then maybe we can tell if there's a fighting chance with Facebook. At the moment, Facebook is really strong on holding its reign over social media sites than even Google will find a hard time beating it.
