Google does not need or want Adobe. They would most likely build on an open source version of a Document Format in the case of PDF files. Or like they are doing, stay on the web. Adobe is an old software company, and will have an is having a difficult time adjusting to the web based application.

Regarding the gigaom article. Google has offline capabilities with Google Gears. But the next version of Gears is on hold, and will be enabled with HTML5 capabilities. Google in my opinion does not want to support deployed software versions and have to support O/S versions which can be crippled by the competitors. Hence Google Chrome O/S, and using the browser for the platform.
I have read an article that google needs Flash for youtube, Acrobat for Google Docs, photoshop for picasa and adobe air for desktop applications. What do you think.

Youtube is using flash now, because it was the best solution at the time. HTML 5 will eliminate the need for flash for video. Chrome, Safari, and Firefox already support this and can enable youtube HTML5 video option, instead of using Flash.
