Will Bestbuy employees tell you you NEED a digital converter box even if you are a cable customer.

I think most are well educated about the subject. At least the ones I've spoken with. These boxes are EXTREMELY low margin so there is no financial justification so I highly doubt it. I'm sure they will be cases where the person who comes in will ask if they need it and a conversation will ensue where the questions don't get answered correctly by the customer because they don't understand the question or don't know the answer. Overall I highly doubt it.

Yes they will they also tried to get me to pay $150 to deliver and setup my TV plus another $350 to calibrate it. They are commission base employees and their are a couple of them to will try to take advantage of you the sad thing is some one that not that tech inclined will pay for these services and not need them. For my grandmother(who calls some one every time she wants to watch a DVD) paying $150 for them to set the TV is probably not a bad idea but for them to oh you have two other TVs you use whale you need to buy two converter boxes. Luckily a friend of mine was the manager and stop them in fact he had them deliver the TV for free. So their not all bad but there are some out their.

Well they are not commisioned based, as far as any non-managment employee there. I use to work there and was honest with customers but i heard of others that weren't. I heard of another store that told costumers that plasma tvs needed to be recharged.

Unfortunately, some out there will. Whether its Best Buy or any retail store for that matter, there are always employees keeping their eyes out for 'easy sales' or 'suckers'. For example, I had a co-worker recently get told by an employee at an electronics store that she needed to have a DVR box as WELL as a Tivo in order to record TV shows. Uh, definitely not.

There are simply people out there that are always looking to take advantage of those who don't know any better and walk into those situations without doing any homework or having any previous knowledge..especially if there is money involved. It's unfortunate, but karma will come back to bite these people in the butt someday.
