Will air travel be more or less expensive over the holidays this year?

Does anyone know what the projections are for air fares this upcoming holiday season? I know last year we were able to get some pretty decent deals - but only last-minute. I'm debating whether to start seriously searching now or wait a bit longer.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi @Laurie M, I am afraid the economic situation is not making things easier. The prices of most goods and services are still increasing; this also includes the airline fares too. The best way to get a cheap airline ticket is still to either book for your ticket 21 days before the date you plan to travel or wait till the last minute.

Whenever I plan to ravel and do not know the exact date, I just listen up for latest news and read the papers to see if an airline is offering some kind of promotion or deal. But if I do not get one I wait for the last minute tickets.

Some of my colleagues always join charter flights, which is cheaper or the ‘’Bumping’’ method. This is a process whereby the airline company offers a free flight voucher plus a seat on the next flight to people who volunteer their own seat for others to use .What they do is to arrive early and put down their names on the volunteer list .

Cities such as Las Vegas have suffered from lack of tourists and visitors. As a result, they have good deals even for the holidays. Depending on where you are, you can fly there and get a package for a much lower price than usual.

For other cities that haven't suffered (New York comes to mind), the prices should more or less be the same as before. As you said, there are usually last-minute deals but this is no guarantee. Many last minute deals come out if a company feels they will not fill enough seats on their airplane or the hotels are below the quota of occupancy. If enough people have booked a particular flight then there may not be a deal. See if you can find out how full a particular flight is before deciding if you want to wait.
