Why does my wireless take so long to connect?

I recently switched wireless routers at home (after moving to FIOS), and it seems to me like my devices now take noticeably longer to negotiate a connection. Sometimes it seems like a good 10+ seconds just to see the icon for "signal acquired" (depending on the device), but even worse, it might be another 5-10 seconds before it gets an IP address. This is especially annoying on my iTouch which needs to reconnect and renegotiate every time I take the thing out of my pocket. And my wife's getting the same problem with her new netbook - she'd like to open it up and check email, not open it up and keep hitting refresh until the "Server not found" message (that you get with no wireless connection) goes away.

If that's the nature of wireless these days (I suspect it's using 802.11g, not N), I guess I'll have to live with it. But I would like to find out if it's indicative of something else, like a configuration issue.

This could be caused by old firmware on the router itself and updating said firmware may fix the problem. It could also be the type of security that the router is using as some encryption can take some time to connect up. There could also be an issue between the brand of router and the network card in your computer (or for that matter an issue between the types of wireless if the router is different from the network card).

Without more details on the specs of everything it is really difficult to know for sure.

My wi-fi manager uses two availible channels from my wireless router... Taking a look at the connection screen in my wireless manager, It shows me two channels - they look like two seperate connections on my network with the same name. One shows 1-2 bars of signal strength, the other shows 100%. If I manually re-connect, the card senses the strongest signal and my internet experience is lightening fast. This is annoying, and I wish it would do this on its own, but it works for me. Hope this helps, if this is the issue - P.
