You might want to be a little clearer with your question. I think you want to put both devices on the wired network. If this is the case the only thing you might need is a small switch. You can buy these at any store that sells networking equipment. I think you can even get them at Walmart. I said might need only because depending on the rules at your universities they may only allow one device be attached to each port. If this is the case the connection sharing idea is possible but might not work so well. And of course would require that you have your computer turned on all the time you want your ATv connected to the internet.

I receive my internet through the university wireless, I also have an Apple TV hooked up to a wired network...
is there a way to use the connection that I receive on my desktop and connect the ATv to the internet?

You can probably do it via Internet Sharing. You haven't specified if your desktop/laptop is OSX or XP so I've provided links for both.
