Can a landline phone company disable answering machines?

Alot of the people in my area's answering machines have broken, or something.. The phones locked up and then after you reset them they will not accept messages. I was thinking maybe the comapnies in a bind for money are going to be offering some paid voice mail service, but is that even possible?

Nope. A phone company can't physically disable an answering machine that you have connected to your phone line.

I bet that there has been a surge (or a couple) of surges over your phone lines. It happens quite often in some areas and answering machines are very susceptible.

I'd call your phone company and tell them about this. The best they'll likely do is to send a technician out to properly ground your landline. However, it might be a good idea to install inexpensive phoneline surge suppressors.

By the way the answering machine works, this is by detecting the ring signal and start the answering process, as long as you hear a ring signal in your phone, the answer machine will work, I agree with robbrown on the surge problem.
