Why would you want to get rid of a fever?

Why would you want to get rid of a fever? When you have a fever your body heats up to kill a virus in your body. So by taking tylenol or a drug you are inhibiting your body's ability to fight off the virus. Right?

You are correct. Taking medicine to fight a fever will slow down the course of the infection, and you will probably take a little bit longer to get over it. There has been some study of this with respect to cold and flu, establishing that lowering the fever actually increases the duration of the infection.

People mainly take medicine to lower the fever to deal with the discomfort, which can be quite severe if the fever is high. A mild drug like tylenol will only lower your fever by a small amount if you just take a single pill, so this is probably not going to prolong your infection by much if you limit your use of it to the few cases when you are experiencing the most discomfort.

In a few rare cases, fever can rise so high that it can be dangerous. MedLine Plus gives the guidelines for adults that a fever that ever rises above 105F should be given immediate medical attention, and a fever that stays above 103F for a longer time, or at 103F and starts rising. Fevers above 107.6 °F can cause brain damage. But if you are in these situations, you absolutely need to seek medical attention, so that you take the proper medication or other precautions to keep your fever at a safe level.

It's worth noting that when your fever is very high, you should listen to your body's signals about overheating. If you feel hot, remove clothes, if you feel cold, bundle up. It's harder for your body to thermoregulate when your body temperature is changing because of a fever...making yourself comfortable will assist your body's natural processes and help you to recover faster.

Yes, getting rid of the fever does inhibit that aspect of fighting viruses and bacteria. However, fevers of over 106 degrees(hyperpyrexia) for long periods of time can cause brain damage and have other permanent negative side effects. A slight fever of 99-102 should be left alone, but above that needs monitoring.

So next time I get a mild fever I should NOT use any drugs to bring it down? And that way I'll get better faster? But I should be eating more food and water to supplement the extra load my body has right?

It isn't a black & white question.
You should use a fever reducer, acetaminophen or aspirin for example, if your temperature is 102 or above. Temperatures above this can lead to serious medical conditions and even death.
If you don't want to take drugs, a cool bath/shower will give short term relief. Rubbing alcohol, applied over a large area of the skin will also reduce the body's core temperature.
Kids under 12 need special attention and should be referred to a pediatrician.
