Why would I play World of Warcraft, if I can play so many other online games for free?

World of Warcraft is played by millions of people, who pay quite an amount of money each month to keep playing the game. Why don't they choose any of the free alternatives? Like Guild Wars, which is similarly good (or even better), especially in story-line, but has free online gameplay?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

First of all the example you gave with the story-line from Guild Wars it’s not a good one. The story-line in Guild Wars is way behind the one from World of Warcraft. And that’s the main reason why WoW has so many fans: It has the best story a MMORPG can have at this moment and the biggest community. Even if the graphics used in the game are behind many other games released until now, such as Aion, Lord of the Rings Online or even Guild Wars, WoW has the best story ever. If you followed this series when it started, back in 1994, you will understand why WoW is different and why it has so many fans.
The fact is that many free MMORPGS are inspired by WoW and that is sad.
In my opinion even LOTRO, a great game with a unique story is inspired from Wow. Take a look at this picture:

The long answer short is:
WoW has the story, the community and most important: Originality.

Many so-called free MMORPGs aren't as free as they look. The might have restricted content for free players, meaning you might not be able to level past a certain point, explore certain areas, or even be able to participate in events. some games have full acess, but sell items that heavily boost your abilities or fighting power in the game. this would put non-paying players at a disadvantage.

WoW charges a monthly fee, but except for the occasional vanity pet or mount, they do not charge additional fees for content.
