Why would I choose iTunes over Rhapsody?

I mostly listen to music online via free sources like Pandora, last.fm, blip.fm, etc. I'm starting to be more mobile, though, and thinking that maybe I should go ahead and bite the bullet and get something that allows me to download the files and take them with me on the go.

Looking at iTunes at, let's say an average of $1 per song, vs. Rhapsody, at a flat rate of $10/month, why would I go with iTunes? Rhapsody seems like a much better deal unless you're a very light listener.

The video below from Chris Pirillo is a couple of years old -- not sure if the issues he raises are all still current. Even then, he still picked Rhapsody.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Scott! This question is near and dear to my heart. I've been pushing my friends for years to subscribe to Rhapsody. Those that do are (almost) never disappointed.

And now, if you are going mobile with a Verizon device (see www.verizonquestions.com for questions and answers regarding Verizon), you can get "Rhapsody-To-Go"!

Get this, Scott, that will allow you to put songs on your phone to stream WITHOUT PAYING PER SONG. So, you can add dozens of new songs, listen to them, delete them, add dozens more. Just about the entire Rhapsody library is available for that plan, too!

I LOVE Rhapsody, have chatted online with their music experts, recruited members, etc. Although I do use iTunes, also - there is no contest!

UPDATE: Whoaaaa, I didn't realize that they reduced the price! I read your $10/mth, and thought it must be some Rhapsody-lite type plan. It looks like it is for the full deal. Thanks, kennbug, I'm calling Verizon to demand a price cut tomorrow!!!

It all depends on how much of a music consumer you are. If you just want the occasional song, then iTunes is perfect for you. At a monthly rate, some people would be uncomfortable with that. I have probably bought $13 TOTAL via online download. People who love music would call me crazy for spending so little.

I think that if you can max out a 4gb iPod, then a solution like Rhapsody is a winner.
