Why would a crimson barberry bush attract flies? How do you get rid of the flies and not kill the bush?

it must be giving off an odor that is attracting the bugs - or there might be a dead mouse nearby, or animal feces.

This might not be suitable where you live, but for some people the best way to get rid of flies - is with pet chickens or ducks!

A year later, it looks like we have an answer. In 2009, we had a really wet year. (2010 was a really dry year) We believe a black fungus on the leaves was attracting the flies. With no action on our part, there was no black fungus or flies this year.

Interesting idea but alas the bush itself is attracting the flies. There are no dead animals or feces. Still looking for an answer.
