Why when the pool temperature is exactly the same as the outside temperature, does it feel cold to get in?

At my local pool they give the temperatures of both the water and the area around the pool. Even when they are exactly the same, it feels cold to get into the water. Obviously it must have something to do with different states of matter. Also, having been in the pool sometime, it feels colder outside and warmer to get back in (though I assume this is do with the water that is still on my skin).

Water is a better conductor of heat and electricity then the air is. That's why you don't get in the bath with a toaster.

The water is better at conducting heat away from your hot hot body than the air is.

Because the temperature of the water against your skin is alot cooler than your body temperature. It's like taking water say (75 degrees) on a towel and applying it to your skin, you feel the coldness because it's over 20 degrees colder than your body temperature.

Thanks but this doesn't explain why it feels colder against my skin than the air which is the exact same temperature. Water being a better conductor of heat does though!

Water conducts heat 20 times more effectively from our body than air by the method of Conduction. As you exit the pool you body is exposed to the air. If the air is the same temperature as the water it will feel warmer after getting back in beacuse your body heat has still not recovered it's loss from being in the pool. Maybe some days you feel that getting back in, it's just as cold as the first time. This would because your body recovers from the heat loss while out of the pool from both the air (convection heat) AND/OR radiant heat (out doors the sun) .
