Why when I ask a question with a tip I get twice as many answers?

some times I just want to ask a fun simplequestion not really worth a tip and no one answers.
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I'm not sure if everyone's settings are defaulted in the same way mine are, but the new questions that are offering a tip are listed before any others. If there are several questions offering a tip, I may have to finish answering before I ever get to the non-tip questions - even though some of those are as fun to answer.

People are more likely to answer a question if a tip is offered because a tip allows you a few things:

1. You can then use the tip you earned to ask a question. The higher the tip value your question offers, the more thorough the answer, and the faster the answers will come.
2. 1 Mahalo dollar translates to 75 US cents, and you can "cash out" when you reach M$40 or more.
3. You can tip others for their helpful comments.

Questions that don't offer tips are, in the eyes of many, "not worth the trouble" but not everybody thinks that way. They're also listed *below* the questions that offer tips, which encourages you to offer a tip so your question gets to the top of the list. It's kinda like eBay, where you can pay an extra $5 to be the "featured item" and be on the top of the list. If the question's compelling enough, people will answer it.

But at the end of the day, it's all about earning the M$1+ because you can do stuff with the cash you earn.

I usually like answering in-depth thoughtful questions here.

Not that there isn't a place for light fun, it's just that I find that the most thoughtfully composed questions have tips attached.

The economy is on hard times, so with limited time in the day available, people must focus on things that will earn revenue. What they too often don't understand is that linking their Mahalo.com profile to their other endeavors on the Internet, while providing quality, useful answers, will drive traffic to your sites and blogs. This could propel you much further than earning some Mahalo Dollars.

Well, that's part of the gimmick after all. It takes effort to answer a question, and people will be more likely to compete for best answer if there's tip money on the line.   If it's important to you to get the best answer, you want as many as possible to choose from

I expect that fun questions with no tip get answers as well - I typically browse "unanswered first" and unless it is some specific question that only certain people could possibly know, normally everything gets answered at least a little bit.

First of all it has to do with how things are categorized.  Tipping items show up first, and there is an option to just show questions that offer tips.  Also, if someone sees two questions exactly the same, but one has a tip and the other doesn't, they will pick the question that has the tip first.  Why?  Because then they can get money and the perceived reward is greater than that of the non-tipping ones.

Are you asking this question as a non-tipping question too, just to see how many more people answer this one than that one

I generally figure that if the question is not worth a tip to the person asking, it's not worth my time and effort answering. It's not that the money amounts to anything even if your answer is best, but rather it means the person asking just doesn't care much. Sometimes I answer other questions that catch my eye, but usually not. And without a tip, the questioner often doesn't even bother picking a best answer or saying thanks.
