Why were they called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers?
I was wondering if they all had been married and divorced 5 times so they were considered to of broken many hearts but that was just my humor and that doesn't seem to be a logical answer....>.<
Was there ever a reason documented as to why they chose that name?

When Tom moved on in 1975 to form Tom Petty & the Heart Breakers his first choice in names for the new band was "The King Bees" but Denny Cordell the producer of Toms new album with this new band opted for the name "Tom Petty & the Heart Breakers" overriding Mr.Petty's first choice of names.(1)
This new band with a new name was also in a new place..The Shelter Studio Hollywood, California (2). I cannot say for sure but the pieces seem to fit with new band + new place + new very experienced record producer = Denny Cordell naming the band as it is named today because he felt it would be best for public consumption and record sales.

Good point....
Hmm...Interesting...I guess my theory was way off! Thanks for answering.
I think we both have thing right, .. at the time Tom, the Heart Breakers and Denny Cordell got together nobody would have been married and divorced 5 times.. yet but the potential was there and this potential was probably glaringly obvious to Denny.. helping him capture the spirit of the rockers he saw before him he chose the "Tom Petty & the Heart Breakers" name not for what they had done but what would be the likely outcome of the bands personal lives... AND the name has a radio friendly unit shifter ring to it.
Tom himself was married to Jane Benyo from 1974 to 1996 so he was married to his first wife at the time of the formation of the Heart Breakers but they did get a divorce and he got married again in 2002 to Dane York and they are still married.(reference)
So maybe Denny thought he saw something in Tom that turned out.. just was not there as Tom remained married through out all of his "rock star" times and years.
