Why were the Mayan cities of Tikal and Copan at war with each other?

What caused the Mayan kings of these two cities to enter war with each other?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The true rivalry was actually with a city founded by Copan. Originally the Copan had not ethnically been Mayans, they were simply absorbed into the population after conquest. The people of Copan founded a city further south (Quiriguá) and gradually became more powerful than Tikal which was at the time considered the center of the Maya empire in that region.

How long was the war between Copan and Tikal? Did the war destroy the civilization or was peace achieved?
