The true rivalry was actually with a city founded by Copan. Originally the Copan had not ethnically been Mayans, they were simply absorbed into the population after conquest. The people of Copan founded a city further south (Quiriguá) and gradually became more powerful than Tikal which was at the time considered the center of the Maya empire in that region.
