My thoughts:

I don't like Registry cleaners. IMHO it does more harm than good. Check this out:

The registry started in Windows 95/NT to replace age old INI text files. Programs had thier own settings saved in INI files, it was hard for programs to find information about each other, much less save settings for something. Microsoft decided to create a respository for this, which I completely agree with.

Like on an XP Machine, it consists of hives named:
Classes root, (C:\Windows\System32\Config\*)
Current User, (C:\docs and settings\userprofile\ntuser.dat)
Local Machine,(C:\Windows\System32\Config\*)
Users,(C:\Windows\System32\Config\*)
Current Machine.(C:\Windows\System32\Config\*)

There is even backup copies in C:\windows\repair, check it out. I could go into detail about each of these, but the topic is about cleaning the registry.

The Registry is a very active place, there is a tool for it named Process Mon. Its located at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx .

Having so-called unused entries does not hurt anything at all. What hurts is loading the registry in memory when the computer boots, or having to search for something inside of it. What hurts more is an application querying the registry repeatedly for something causing trouble when it does not handle the result to well. Also, running the Process monitor tool will show you what keys are being called up that are having probelms with. You are much better off fixing this than to run a tool that wipes out so-called "unused entries". The Process monitor runs in real time so you can see where the problems are.

I just ran it for my machine and found out that explorer.exe is having trouble locating some keys that arent there.

for instance, my old touchpad driver is hitting this key up every 2 seconds... I need to fix this LOL!

Operation: RegOpenKey
Path: Software\Synaptics\SynTPEnh
Result: PATH SYNTAX BAD.

Take a look at yours, see what you think.

Well some people are using it purely to advertise a certain site they are getting paid to promote.....

... other people use them mainly because they have been scared into using them. In most cases they offer little benefit and come at a tremendously high risk of damage to the windows registry and can infect machines with hidden spyware, But because they are marketed at the gullible, or people without much experience they are sold as 'cure all' things that will make your computer run faster. When the truth is the are little more than digital snake oil.

The Registry is an enormous database and all this “Cleaning” really doesn’t amount to much…I’ve said this before, but I liken it to “sweeping out one parking space in a parking lot the size of Montana” … a registry “tweak” here and there is desirable or even necessary sometimes, but random “cleaning”, especially for the novice, is inviting disaster.

I also would like someone to show me any hard evidence that registry cleaning actually improves performance. (Unless there is a specific problem that has to be addressed by making changes to the registry).

Sorry to go on like this, but I feel there is way to much Registry “Cleaning” going on these days just for the sake of “cleaning

Because they will help you safeguard your computer just like antivirus. Note that sometimes antivirus are more costlier than registry files.

All in all, registry cleaners that are free can do wonders although paid register cleaner utilities are also available. Depends on the way you are using your system.

You always want to keep your registry free of errors and mismatched files. If the registry goes screwy then your computer can suffer.

If you're looking for a registry cleaner, i can highly recommend CCleaner: small, easy to use and fast.

I'm pointing out, as your very good source indicates, that running a registry cleaner isn't a no-brainer. In fact many of the cases of the registry 'going screwy' is caused by people running registry cleaners, as shown in the comments of the blog post that you linked to.

Your expert divided the debate into 3 camps, he is in the third and wrote a good set of reasons why thats the case. Back in the windows 95/98 days I'd have completely agree with him. Now however due to having to repair computers that have been crippled by registry cleaners, I'm in the second camp that says they do more harm than good,

BUT if you want to use them, I'd recommend following the advice in the blog post that you linked to and make sure that you know what the necessary precautions are, and that you do the preparatory backups first.

From the site that you linked to....

I should mention that technology experts have differing opinions on the value of registry cleaners. Some adamantly claim that they cannot possibly improve system performance. Others say they might help a little, but point out that in some cases they can cause damage as well. And of course others believe they can offer significant benefits. I tend to be in the latter camp, but recommend caution when using a registry cleaner. Choose the tool that suits your level of technical expertise, and do your preparatory backups.
