The massive edifice can be found in the city of Agra, India and is considered to be the main destination when tourists visit India. The Taj Mahal is on the list of Seven Wonders of the World due to its unique design and aesthetic beauty. The structure was built in a span of 20 years comprising at least 20,000 workers. The construction commenced during the year 1632 and it was finished by the year 1653.

In terms of its historical origins, the Taj Mahal was built to serve as a mausoleum for the love of the Emperor Shah Jahan to his wife which suffered an untimely death, when she gave birth. Accordingly, "Some historians believe it was built to not only honor the emperor's wife whom he deeply loved, but also as a "noble tribute to the grace of Indian womanhood."

Hi @1337!
The Taj Mahal was constructed in 1631 by the emperor Sha Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz who died giving birth. The white marble mausoleum found in Agra become a monument of a man's love for a woman.

Emperor Sha Jahan came to power in 1622 after seizing the throne from his father and murdering his brothers to ensure his claim to the throne. He was an extravagant and cruel leader but redeemed himself by his generosity to his friend and for the poor, and by his devotion to his wife Mumtaz Mahal. He married her when he was 21 and already had two children through an earlier consort.

He and Mumtaz had 14 children in 18 years and she died at age 39 while giving birth to their youngest child. The Taj Mahal was built by Sha Jahan as a monument to her memory and her fertility. This tomb was only one of the many beautiful buildings that Sha Jahan erected under his rule.

Many architect thought that this is the most perfect of all buildings on earth. There were three artists who designed it one is from Persia, the second from Italy and one from France. The design however, is completely Mohammedan.

Hi 1337man!

The Taj Mahal in its entirety spreads over 32 acres of land and was built between 1631 to 1653 in Agra, India. The story behind the building of the Taj Mahal is one of love, remembrance and ancient practice swirled around legendary stories of uniqueness. The Taj Mahal is the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, the beloved wife of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. Now one of the seven wonder of the world, the Taj Mahal was built in remembrance by the emperor for his wife but as one of the many legends go, the emperor Shah Jahan cut off the hands of all of the men who took part in building the Taj Mahal, to ensure that another building could not be built that could be considered the same. The architecture has a mixture of Persian, Ottoman, India and Islamic art. During the year 1983, the Taj Mahal became a part of the UNESCO, World heritage Site.
