Yes, the Rugrats was a very popular show. I enjoyed watching it when my kids were pre-teen. They had adventures and they played well together. They learned together, and managed to stay within safe distance of some parent or another.
I am not sure why they cancelled the show, but maybe it is because, like all things, the Rugrats just grew up. They did have a continuation show, All Grown Up featuring the same kids, but they are around 10 to 12 years old now. Maybe they just felt that the best way to allow children to understand growing up was to ensure they did not also see the characters as babies at the same time?
Competition is another reason that Rugrats was cancelled. After all, with all things, change must come. Spongebob Squarepants took a corresponding time slot, and with the catchy opening song, and the fun characters who lived under the sea, the competition was pretty steep.
