Why was Silvio Berlusconi attacked?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Silvio Berlusconi is very popular with some Italians, and hated by others.

He is the richest man in Italy, and is a media empire owner like Rupert Murdoch. Lately, his wife has started divorce proceedings against him, after a series of press revelations that make Tiger Woods look like a virgin.

The guy that attacked him (allegedly) is Massimo Tartaglia, who has (allegedly) a history of mental illness, which may also have been a factor.

According to BBC news the person who attacked was a mentally retarded person. Here are the related facts.

---quote----
Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy is recovering in hospital after an assault left his face covered in blood following a rally in Milan.

The alleged attacker, who has a history of mental illness, has been charged with throwing the souvenir.

Alleged attacker Massimo Tartaglia was detained at the scene
Massimo Tartaglia, 42, had no previous criminal record, police were quoted as saying.

It was a typical show of defiance by a political fighter, says the BBC's Duncan Kennedy in Rome.

The motivation for this physical attack is not clear.
