Why was Princess Leia forced to wear a bikini?

I mean...I'm not naive. I realize even a PG movie such as Star Wars has to have a little sex appeal, but my boyfriend is a big fan of that part...the part where Jabba the Hutt took Princess Leia prisoner and made her wear a bikini...and I was just curious. Why do they have that part?
Is there supposed to be some hidden meaning behind the outfit. If Jabba needed a slave, wouldn't a collar and chain have been just fine enough?
Also, my nephew is coming to stay with us this weekend and my boyfriend says it's ok to let him watch it because it's PG, but should I let him watch the movie based on that one part? He is only 5.
What do you all think? Why a bikini? And should I let my nephew watch it?

Short answer...Cause it's a movie and Carrie Fisher looked hot in it:

Longer answer...

I'm thinking we, as adults, can recognize the implications of that outfit...She's not just an slave girl being held by Jabba, but an attractive one, and is being paraded around dressed in something sexy and revealing, like a trophy. It reinforces the notion of Jabba as a ruthless, cruel warlord. He has no respect for the law, for justice, for the Jedi...and also no respect for women. The movie sends a clear message, though, that this behavior is wrong, when Jabba gets his comeuppance.

Having said that, I don't really think there's anything all that inappropriate for kids in that sequence, and I certainly saw the movie when I was about that age. Kids are not at all going to be focused on the subtext there. They'll get the big picture - Jabba's evil, Luke's a badass, Leia and Han are now safe from harm.

I think Jabba was a villain who had to dominate over everything in his path. He considered himself a ruler of a huge criminal empire (which he was, sort of a universal Al Capone) and like most gangsters, he wanted to make it clear that he was the alpha dog, or alpha hut, as it were.

So yes, other than the fact that George Lucas wanted him to seem more ruthless, I think it was also a more intrinsic look at Jabba's personality. His need of dominance. Her being exposed made him feel more powerful and probably pretty aroused. In fact, her sheer exposure, the thought of her embarrassment, might have been even MORE of a turn on for the disgusting hut. Sort of like a sado-masochist relationship-thing going on.

But yea, she did look pretty darn smokin'. The extra eye candy didn't hurt the target demographic, which was clearly teenage and adult males.

A 5 year old will not be irreparably by seeing Carrie Fisher in a bikini. I'd be more concerned about the violent aspects of the movie but sadly I think even for a 5 year old that ship has sailed.

http://www.leiasmetalbikini.com/ is a gratuitous link which is only mildly related to your question.
