Why "W" is called "double-U"? Why not something like "vee" or "voo" , ie How can an alphabet contain another word - "double" ?

Tip for best answer: M$0.12
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

W is the twenty third letter in the English alphabet.
its origin is actually a double V. It is the only letter made this way so that's probably why the double pronunciation does not occur anywhere else.

The VV became popular after the Norman conquest. Fascinating

Interestingly in German the W is still pronounced V Volkswagon is pronounced Volksvagon in German.
